two grubs averaged over five
scouting locations,” he said. “That
doesn’t mean, however, they can’t
all come from the same site. If you
have five in the same site, that will
suffice.”
The 2017 growing season
however will mark a significant
change.
As of 2017, regardless of
percentage of acreage being planted
with NNI treated seeds, an
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
written declaration form stating that
the farmer will adhere to IPM
principles will be necessary.
Special mandatory IPM training
will be available over the next year
to help with the new rules and teach
the inspection methods.
The program will be phased in
three stages depending on the area.
Dufferin, Frontenac, Halton,
Lambton, Middlesex, Muskoka,
Prince Edward, Stormont, Dundas
and Glengarry, Toronto and
Wellington geographical areas will
have to have a professional,
third-party pest advisor conduct the
soil pest inspection in 2017 for the
2018 planting season.
For 2019 seed orders, a
professional pest advisor must be
used by Bruce, Elgin, Grey,
Haldimand, Hamilton, Huron,
Nipissing, Norfolk, Ottawa, Oxford,
Peel, Sudbury and Waterloo
geographical areas.
For 2020 seed orders, Algoma,
Brant, Chatham-Kent, Cochrane,
Durham, Essex, Haliburton,
Hastings, Kawartha Lakes, Kenora,
Leeds and Grenville, Lennox and
Addington, Manitoulin, Niagara,
Northumberland, Parry Sound,
Perth, Peterborough, Prescott and
Russell, Rainy River, Renfrew,
Simcoe, Thunder Bay, Timiskaming
and York geographical areas will
require a professional pest advisor
for the soil pest inspection.
After the initial professional
review, a professional inspection is
required every three years with the
years in between performed by the
farmer.
After the initial studies, if
untreated acreage experiences a
loss of 15 per cent of corn or 30 per
cent of soybeans due to pests, a
professional pest advisor can
complete an inspection of crop to
allow for NNI seed treatment in the
next growing season.
Each year, the process is to be
repeated for farmers looking to use
NNI-treated seeds.

changes, visit ontario.ca
Shannon Bieman, one of the
representatives for Snobelen
Farms, said that the day was a
great success. She said there was a
lot of good feedback from the
approximately 140 farmers, seed
representatives and stakeholders in
attendance.
“This is the first time we’ve done
something like this, but we
are looking at doing it again as the
new regulations approach,” she
explained.
