The Citizen, 2015-09-03, Page 23THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2015. PAGE 23. The first-ever Brussels firefighter swim relay was a rousing success, raising over $5,000 for a new compressor for the department, while a neighbouring event raised well over $1,000 for the Ronald McDonald House. Heather Dunbar, the organizer of the swim relay, said she was amazed at the skill and athleticism displayed by members of the fire department. The crew got together last Wednesday, she said, for a practice session, after which Dunbar thought they would still be swimming on Monday morning to finish their 300 laps of the pool. However, it took just 100 minutes for them to reach their goal, which blew Dunbar away. “I thought it was fabulous,” she said of the event. After the swim, several firefighters took their chances at the dunk tank, including Dunbar, Jamie Hickling, Ken Higgins, Chief Max McLellan and Deputy-Fire Chief Doug Sholdice. The final two names carried with them a hefty price tag, Dunbar said, as McLellan said he would only sit atop the dunk tank if $500 was raised to dunk him. A similar challenge was posed for Sholdice for $250. In addition, several local businesses and emergency services agencies had vehicles available for the “Touch the Truck” portion of the day. At the end of the day, the event raised $5,374 for the department’s new compressor, which gets Brussels firefighters to within $2,500 of their goal of $19,838, $12,000 of which had already been raised ahead of the swim relay. Next, Dunbar says, the firefighters plan on continuing to fundraise, perhaps enlisting the help of local service clubs to help get them to their goal. Dunbar said she was amazed by the support of the Brussels community, with members of the fire department commenting that if the event had raised half of what it eventually did, they would have been surprised. Just across the road, the Western Ontario Athletic Association (WOAA) held its year-end Bantam tournament at the Optimist Ball Park, where money was being raised for the Mitchell family and the Ronald McDonald House in the wake of a collision that left three young people injured. Barbecue organizer Gary Pipe said that while it’s still a little too early to have a final tally of how much money was raised, it’s safe to assume that over $1,000 was raised for the Ronald McDonald House. Swim relay raises over $5,000 for compressor Firefighter relay Brussels firefighters found themselves in need of a new compressor, so they took to the pool to do something about it under the direction of avid swimmer and new firefighter Heather Dunbar. Several firefighters endeavoured to swim 300 lengths of the Brussels Pool and did so in under two hours. The event raised over $5,000 for the new compressor, which gets the department to within $2,500 of its goal.
