Young Company puts its clown show on stage Hitting the stage This year’s Blyth Festival Young Company production, called Hatchlings and Hayseeds, took to the stage on Wednesday and will run through to Saturday. A clown show, the production attempts to tell stories without the use of speaking. Above, a first date plays out between Liv Hussey, left, and Isaac VanAaken, centre, while Liam Morley, right, provides some musical accompaniment. Below, Lydia Newcastle took some extreme measures to hunt a fly that made her room its temporary home. (Denny Scott photos) While the Young Company’s newest production, called Hayseeds and Hatchlings (A Huron County Clown Show), may not be the most verbose production to date, that doesn’t mean the play lacks a message. The clown-style play was performed by an all-new Young Company troupe with no members returning from previous years. Using very few words and relying on exaggerated emotional and physical responses, the group brings together a slate of different dream- like pieces with some running story lines throughout. Don’t think, however, that clown means everything will be funny. While there is plenty of comedy, there are also themes of love and loss brought to life with almost no language whatsoever. The show also features a lot of crowd interaction, from the audience being dragged to stage, invited up on stage or armed for war and asked to take part in the show. The audience is also rewarded for enjoying themselves, though, no spoilers here about how that works. The stage is minimalistic which further enforces the need for the emotional and physical responses to be spot on, which the troupe manages. While the story makes the play enjoyable and the comedy makes it funny, what really makes the play fun, is that it’s apparent the actors are enjoying themselves too. The smiles aren’t forced, they aren’t faked and, despite the fact that the show is done in clown-style, they aren’t painted on. The emotions that aren’t happy are well acted, but when the actors are SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 26th @ 8PM BLYTH MEMORIAL HALL 423 Queen Street519-523-9300www.BlythFestival.com ONE NIGHT ONLYONE NIGHT ONLY ! ! “Ring of Fire” “I Walk The Line” “Boy Named Sue” FROM MEMPHIS TO FOLSOM “Ri f Fi ” JIM YORFIDOJIM YORFIDO FROM MEMPHIS TO FOLSOMFROM MEMPHIS TO FOLSOM JOHNNY CASHJOHNNY CASH Starring the Amazing TICKETS $29 all inclusive Parkland FUEL CORPORATION uFFu Book & L y Must clos FINAL PERFORMANCES mith, Musieter SSmyrics by PPe ury ok & LLy - Mary Alderson, Ent e Sept 12Must clos FINAL PERFORMANCES holdiceamuel SShic by SSa ertain this Thought - Mary Alderson, Ent Sponsors Season 2017 - 2015 TIONAORPORFUEL C arklandP Sponsor Media 2015 Sponsor oduction PrFury ets tBook your tick o.erry Manzos by TPhot and Eli Ham. er alkom: Sophia WtBot Rachel Cairns. op: Jeff Irving and T estival.coday! blythfets t - Mary Alderson, Ent Mary’s W tephen Massicotteby S obert R- R 862.5984.8777.om 1.estival.c ertain this Thought - Mary Alderson, Ent eddingWWe tephen Massicotte eid Between the Lineseid, Robert R 862.5984 Sponsor Media Fury Sponsor oduction Predding W’s Mary Sponsor Media eddingW’s Mary 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Open House for Shirley & George Wheeler Sunday, September 13 2-4 pm Brussels United Church Basement 61 King St., Brussels Join us in Celebration!
