Memories sought to be shared at last Duff’s service
Duff’s United Church held the
celebration of baptism on the last
Sunday in August. Three little boys
were welcomed into the Duff’s
Church family: Wes James
McDonald, the son of Scott and
Alicia McDonald, Dallas Colin
James Young, the son of Barry and
Sarah Young, and Colton Marco
VanDriel, son of Marco and Jennifer
VanDriel. Pastor Sandra Cable
conducted the service in front of a
full house of members, family and
friends.
A congregational meeting was
held following the service for the
purpose of voting on the decision by
the trustees to sever the manse and
the church, and additional lot, to
allow the three properties to be sold
through a realtor. The decision of the
congregational vote concurred with
the trustees and the decision will be
forwarded to the Huron Perth
Presbytery.
A gathering of members and
friends of Duff’s United Church
Women, (UCW) is going to be held
on Sept. 9.
A catered meal of roast beef will
be available and the cost is $20.
Stories and remembrances of the
many years of UCW members,
events, fun times in the kitchen,
‘whoopsy” in the kitchen and
whatever folks remember as “good
times”. If you would like to attend,
contact Heidi McClure or Gloria
Wilbee. Come for the meal or arrive
for the social time to follow, but
please come to enjoy the evening.
The final church service for Duff’s
United is slated for Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.
The service will be held in the
afternoon to allow for travel time for
those from afar to attend. Please
invite your family to come and enjoy
the final service in this beautiful
church. The board is in the process
of planning the event. They are
looking for anyone who wishes to
share a moment or thought in two
minutes or less as they relate
memories of Duff’s. Another option
if you may not wish to speak
yourself, is to have your memory
read by another. Contact Patty Banks
519-887-6156. Please plan to join
us at Duff’s United.
There is no service at Duff’s this
Sunday, Sept. 6 but services
resume for Sept. 13, 20 and the
final, 27th.

McGavins claim first, third at national championship
Congratulations to the McGavin
family on a job well done at the
Canadian Plowing Match held at
Wolfe Island near Kingston. The duo
of father Brian McGavin was
plowing for Ontario and son
Brandon McGavin was plowing for
Alberta. Brian had commented he
hoped he hadn’t taught Brandon too
much over the years, but as it turns
out, he had. Brandon was crowned
the Canadian Champion and Brian
placed third. The other Ontario
plowman placed second. A great few
days for the McGavin family.
Brandon returned to Alberta and will
represent Canada next year at the
World Plowing Match in England.
Some folks may have seen the
familiar face of Dr. Janine Knight
around the Listowel area. She spent
two weeks working from the
Listowel Hospital and two weeks at
the Exeter Hospital. She has now
returned to do two weeks in St.
John’s, Newfoundland, before
returning to Goose Bay, Labrador to
work until next July. While here, she
spent time visiting when she could
with both her mom and dad’s
families. Hope she enjoyed her time
in Ontario and that the time flies
over the next year for her.
The Millstone plant in Walton was
a busy place to be one day last week.
They held a mock disaster for all
their employees to learn about
emergency procedures in various
scenarios. They went over all safety
issues, where safety equipment was,
emergency numbers and anything
concerning work place safety.
Always a great idea to be prepared
and educated.
Sympathies offered to families
Our sympathies are extended to
the Rice family on the passing of
Berva (McCutcheon) Rice. She will
be missed by her children Larry and
Judy and their families. She will also
be missed by her many siblings. Our
condolences to all.
Returning from a week away are
nine Walton area men. They went to
Bowling Green, Ohio for the annual
World’s Largest Tractor Pull. They
camped on a 100-acre site and were
shuttled to the event site. They had a
great time camping, renewing old
friendships, making new friends and
watching the competition. Enjoying
the trip were Don Dalton, Gary
McNichol, Wayne Hopper, Jonathon
Hugill, Bruno, John and Adam
Braecker, Larry McNichol and Ray
Brown. Welcome back!
Our fast healing wishes go to
Nelva Scott who suffered a fall. We
hope she will be out and about real
soon. Audrey Hackwell is in
Stratford Hospital at this time and
we hope she will be able to return to
Huronlea soon. It is nice to see
Stewart Steiss out and about after
having a knee replacement. He says
it is coming along nicely but still has
an ache.
Congratulations to George
Cousins who celebrated his 80th
birthday in the past few weeks.
George and Emily along with Max
and Barb Watts went out to dinner in
Elmira to celebrate the occasion.
Both of these couples also
celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversaries in 2015.
A come-and-go shower for Sarah
Williamson was held at St. Ambrose
Church last week on Thursday
evening. She received many lovely
gifts from friends and the
community. There was a family
shower held on Saturday at St.
Ambrose with many relatives of the
Blakes and Williamsons in
attendance.
Hosting a family luncheon on
Sunday, in honour of the baptism of
their son Wes, were Scott and Alicia
McDonald. They had Rick and Jo-
Ann, Lee Ann McDonald, Kelly
with sons Connor and Owen Jarosz,
Neil McDonald and Marg Rogerson
for lunch following church.
Grandparents Fred and Heidi
McClure hosted the baptismal
luncheon for grandson Colton on
Sunday. Parents Marco and Jennifer,
along with Darrell and Lisa and
Adam and friend and great-grand-
mother Hanna Nater of Mitchell and
many members of the VanDriel
family attended following the
baptism at Duff’s United Church.
Jim and Linda McDonald’s home
was where grandson Dallas Young
celebrated his baptism. Sarah and
Barry along with great-grandmother
Marilyn McDonald and many
members of the Young family
enjoyed a meal and afternoon
together.
Good news! Sarah Mitchell was
allowed to come home for the
weekend! They took her to Camp
Kintail to visit her friends where she
was to have worked for the summer.
She was not to overdo it, but I’m
sure the change of scenery did a
world of good! Grandpa Emerson
wasn’t sure what she all did, but was
happy to see her. She is now off to a
Toronto Hospital for her rehab
treatments but will be able to come
home weekends.
Ross and Shirley Smith are happy
to have son Rob, home for a visit
from Alberta. He is here for a short
time and has spent time visiting his
daughters Krista and Michelle and
went to Sudbury to visit son Jamie.
A family get-together was held at
brother Ken’s for everyone to have a
visit with him before his return.
Enjoying a great vacation in the
east coast were Steve and Marni
Knight. They went to visit Joanne
(Knight) and Weldon Black and
family for a week in New
Brunswick. They enjoyed
unseasonably high temperatures,
and went for a trip to Moncton. They
enjoyed lots of lobster, scallops and
varieties of seafood and a great visit
with the family.

What is an annuity?

When it comes to retirement income, Registered Retirement Income Funds are by far the
most popular choice for Canadians. Most of us convert our Registered Retirement Savings
Plans to RRIFs. But for some, an annuity is a better choice.
An annuity is a straightforward income solution. It will generate fixed payments, without the
need to manage investments or make complex financial decisions in retirement.
An annuity is a contract with a financial institution that provides regular income in exchange
for a lump sum of money. The regular payments-which are usually monthly-consist of
repayment of part of the principal of your original investment, plus income earned by the
investment. When you purchase an annuity with RRSP funds, you are taxed on the
income.
The primary drawback of an annuity is that you have little control over your investment or
level of income. However, if a guaranteed income stream for life suits your needs and
you're after simplicity, an annuity is worth considering.

Fall signs show up
A lady greeted me one day this
week with the sentence that
“everything is turning” and she was
right. Driving around the country
side you can see the crops are
starting to turn, beans turning
yellow, ground turning brown
because it has been plowed, flowers
turning brown as they begin to die
down, leaves started to change to the
beautiful colours of fall. Yes, she was
right, things are turning or
changing.
We have just gone through a
cooler spell and are heading into
maybe the last “heat wave” of the
summer. Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy!
The summer is almost over and
school begins next week. The start of
school also means the start of music
lessons, dance lessons, maybe
Brownies, Guides, Scouts, hockey
and other activities. It also means
that the year of 2015 is two-thirds
over. Only five weeks until
Thanksgiving, eight weeks until
Halloween and the end of Daylight
Saving Time, 10 weeks till
Remembrance Day and 16 weeks
until Christmas! If the next 16
weeks fly as fast as the past 36
weeks, we will be into 2016 before
you know it.
A few more birthdays for the
month of August include Emmitt
Shortreed, Stephen Ryan, Steve
Eckert, Bryce Kruse, Steve Parr,
Sharon Pryce, Brenda Raven,
Jocelyne Tipple, Tim Wharton, Brian
Huether, Albrecht Ringgenberg,
Rhonda Ryan and Kim Strome.
September starts off with MaryLou
Driscoll, Maxine Houston, Vicki
Carter, Jaedon O’Neill, Brent Pryce,
Shirley Skinner, Gabrielle Sanchez
Warwick, Joelle Glanville, Barb
Finlayson and Kim Humphries.
Happy birthday to all.

Going for the gold, winning silver
The Huron County 4-H Go for the Gold competition was
held earlier this summer and two teams from the South
Huron Sheep Club participated, but came up just short of
the Wawanosh team, which placed first. Here is the second
place team from South Huron. Back row, from left: Coach
Deb Falconer, Graham Falconer, Jolande Oudshoorn and
front, left Janette Plaetzer and right, Luanne McGregor.
