Reunion meals provided by Blyth church
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Aug. 30
was Terry Richmond. Ushering were
David Onn and Mary Lou Stewart.
Floyd Herman was music director
and Lavern Clark ran the power
point. This was a service of musical
tribute to Floyd.
Rev. Gary Clark welcomed
everyone to church and drew
attention to the announcements
printed in the bulletin and running
on the power point. He made special
mention that help was needed to
help prepare and serve the meals at
the Thresher Reunion both Friday
and Saturday noon and supper. Rev.
Clark invited everyone to greet one
another. The first hymn was “Come
All You People.” The opening prayer
was followed by the singing of a
favourite hymn.
Laura Bernard, Floyd’s daughter,
introduced the favourite hymn “He”
which was one of Floyd’s mother’s
favourite and also a favourite of
Floyd’s. It must have been a
favourite of many others
because you could hear
everyone join in. The scripture
reading was from James 1: 17-27.
Floyd introduced the anthem
“What a Wonderful World,” which
the choir sang. This was a favourite
of the choir and they have sung it
many times throughout Floyd’s
musical ministry.
Rev. Clark’s message to the
congregation was “See the Play,
Hear the Sermon: Fury.” We live in a
beautiful world but there is often a
storm brewing. Jesus tells us of
many parables from which we learn
many things. In the play Fury they
don’t see the storm coming. Often
we just see the clouds forming and
all of a sudden the storm is upon us.
If we know the storm is coming we
can sandbag our houses in hopes that
the storm will stay at bay. The
sandbagging often saves personal
property. Often we put these walls
up as a temporary fix, but they stay
in place for the next storm. In the
play Fury the judge is a mariner and
is afraid of the ocean so he moves
away from the Maritimes. Margaret
comes to the judge because her
family, father and brother are lost at
sea. Michael comes into her life as a
free-spirited person. Michael feels
he can’t succeed at anything and
puts a wall up. Margaret and
Michael fall in love and the walls
they have built around them come
down and they both change.
We are human and should expect
storms in our lives. In the scriptures,
James tries to give all the different
churches scattered about advice. He
tells the people to lead with their
ears. Counting to 10 is like listening
with our ears. If we listen to people,
we can find out what is troubling and
maybe we can help. Most of us do
not listen with intent to understand,
we listen with intent to reply. We
should put our faith into action and
feel safe. Faith in God and in others
makes us feel safe. The joy of
singing makes a church a safe
sanctuary.
The next hymn “O Love That Will
Not Let Me Go” was sung followed
by the receiving of the offering, the
offertory response “Grant Us God
The Grace of Giving,” the offertory
prayer, the prayers for the people,
silent prayers and the singing of the
Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn “God
Be With You Until We Meet Again”
was followed by the blessing and
grace for the food we are about to
eat and the singing of “Thank You
God” to the tune of Edelweiss.
Everyone went downstairs for
lunch and a time of fellowship with
Floyd and Liz Herman and to
celebrate Floyd’s ministry of music
at Blyth United Church.

A facelift for the big weekend
The 54th annual reunion of the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association will be held
Sept. 11-13 and feature all sorts of great events including, for the first time ever, an entire
group of blacksmiths to show their trade at the show. To help accommodate the larger-than-
normal group of smiths and the hopefully larger-than-normal audiences they will bring,
members of the association were busy giving the blacksmith shop a facelift last week. (Denny

Where did our summer go? Here it
is Aug. 31 when I write this column
and the summer has disappeared. We
have had good weather. We got rain
when the farmers needed it and the
crops are turning out to be pretty
well.
Everyone is gearing up for
Threshers weekend. Our small town
will turn into thousands of people
coming to see the old machinery and
how it works. There are
demonstrations, musical entertain-
ment, crafts in the arena and
throughout the grounds, delicious
food both in the arena and out on the
grounds, entertainment for the kids
and a parade around the grounds
every day. Come and join us in
this special weekend of music and
fun.

a growing discovery of the vileness of self, and a deepening appreciation of the
preciousness of Christ.
