Downtown Brussels Many vendors offering flowers, produce, organic ice cream & more September marks geese, students getting ready to go Have you noticed the Canada geese doing their practice runs this past week? They really are just like us, individually scurrying around, doing a lot of honking and finally getting to work. Suddenly the V formation is evident, the honking stops and the flight progresses. We really should observe the animal more often, we’d save a lot of time and energy. September has arrived. If not done already, the preparations are in full swing to see the post-secondary folks hit the road some near, some far, but all are ready to make our world a better place. For the local students, this week is the time to see if the clothes still fit, if the backpack is still okay. Do I have the right supplies and finally, what else do I need to do before Tuesday? Oh yes, it’s a busy week for many. For others memories are out in full force. The years are reviewed and the stages of the children are remembered with a smile. The year of the toothless smile, the year when multiplication tables ruled, the bully, the best friends, the questionable teacher, first love, chapter books, speeches and science fairs are all up for review. Oh yes September is time of growth and renewal. Our travelling ball teams have done us proud, going both east and west this summer. Be sure to ask the parents and coaches and you’ll get all the details about travelling to a new area with energetic players who are doing their very best. Congratulations to everyone of you, you’ve done our community proud. Our Fall Fair is approaching fast, time to review the fair book, check your talent supply and get the plans started, your time and effort in exhibiting is appreciated by many. Many, many thanks to the fair board and the helpers who make the fair happen each year. As I think about the past week and month volunteers come quickly to the surface. Stop and think about your favourite things about our community, now remove those that work by volunteer labour. Darn, there goes the fundraiser at the pool on Saturday, Soup & More is gone, no one at 5Rs, ball and soccer teams are kaput, no meals or dances at the Legion, no choirs in church, 4H gone, North Huron Food Share disappears and those are just a start. Everyone of those groups is what makes our community caring. As you make your fall plans, pick one and verbally, financially or personally offer to help. You will be the winner. Celebrate Labour Day, celebrate your life. Bye now, Betty G.W. Saturday morning, the library hosted the second of two craft days organized with the help of the Brussels Agricultural Society, but this pair chose the more traditional library experience of reading a great story that day. (Jim Brown photo) At the Branch Cadets starting soon By Jo-Ann McDonald The executive meeting of Brussels Legion Branch for August was held on Tuesday evening with nine members present. Special guest was Jacqui Workman, the outside auditor of the Branch books. She found everything in excellent order and answered questions for those present. The meeting continued after her departure with the usual business. The Branch Veteran’s Service Officer, Comrade Mabel Glanville reports the Provincial Service Officer, Kim, will be in our area in October. Any veteran wishing an appointment needs to contact Mabel before Oct. 9. Sports Officer Rick McDonald attended the district sports meeting and the Branch will not host any district events this year. It will host a zone event, single and double darts in January. Sports sheets will be up at the Branch soon. The first event is cribbage and is in early November. Both Youth Chairman Nanci Ducharme and Poppy Chairman Sandra Josling report they will be attending the upcoming seminars for their respective chairs. President Jo-Ann attended the full council meeting on Wednesday evening at Howick Branch at Gorrie Hall. She presented the president’s report and the PRO report.
