Farmers, people on holidays, sports teams, campers and even those having to work, couldn’t complain about the weather. The wheat crop is coming on strong with some farmers out combining. All fields are not created or ripened equally, so the process will go on for a couple of weeks. The Walton Children’s Outdoors Sports day camp had 65 kids attending this year. They had a very good week with the children learning about a variety of sports and educational activities. The camp is for a week and is from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The children bring their own lunches, and healthy snacks and water are provided throughout the day. Local Organics supplied some of the healthy snacks and 20 gallons of water were consumed on the very hot days. The volunteers of the Grey station of the Huron East Fire Department came on the first day to talk and teach the kids about basic training in firefighting. They dressed in the very hot and heavy fire gear, practiced with the fire hose and learned about fire safety. The kids and the firefighters had a great day. A fun day followed with team- building activities and instruction on the high ropes course. LeeAnn McDonald and her volunteers from the Blackswan Rugby Club from Stratford arrived to teach the kids about the sport of rugby. Maitland Valley Conservation representative Erin Dolmage arrived on day three to work with the kids on geocaching – which is basically treasure hunting with a GPS unit. They had to find the cache with the co-ordinates given and then move onto the next task. They learned how to read a map and were taught basic wilderness survival skills. Water was the theme for the afternoon. Timber Outfitters of Seaforth arrived with kayaks and canoes for the kids to try and then on to Joe Dwyer’s fishing pond to learn about bait and fishing. Most of the kids managed to catch a fish. Motocross was next on the schedule and Matt Lee arrived to be the instructor. All the kids had a chance to learn to ride and someone from 360 Bikes and Boards taught the children about riding BMX bikes. Instruction in functional fitness was given by Kaleda Connell of Degree Fitness on the final day. A climb to the top of the tower with a reward of freezies and then the closing ceremonies followed. More treats of ice cream to end the very hot day and a very successful week. Alma Watson has been welcomed to the Huronlea family. We hope she enjoys meeting old friends and making new ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with Neil and Marie Mitchell and their family as they cope with children in hospital. Sean and Sarah, along with a visiting young lady, Guiliana, from Italy, were involved in a very serious car accident last week. The two girls are in a London Hospital in serous condition and Sean suffered less serious injuries and has been released from hospital. We encourage everyone to pray for these young people at this time. Anyone wishing to aid the family at this time are encouraged to support Ronald McDonald House. For more information, or to help, contact Gloria Wilbee. Summer is holiday time, which includes day trips, weekends away, cottage rentals or seeing Canada, or the world. Kevin Wilbee chose to see some of the world. He has returned from a trip to South America, Quito, Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands with Intrepid Tours. He enjoyed the Galápagos Islands and the animal life the most – giant tortoise, tropical birds, sea lions and the amazing beaches. They hiked to the Sierra Negra volcano and enjoyed the terrain and sights. There were around 13 people on the tour, mostly single travellers and one young couple with teenage children. They finished the trip in Peru, hiking and camping the Inca Trail in Machu Picchu. The temperature at night was -5°C in the mountains. While Kevin was there, the Pope arrived and the airports all shut down, causing a bit of a delay on the return flight. He reports it was great trip. We wish Ashley Stevenson a quick and full recovery after breaking her knee cap in a bike riding accident. She will be most of the summer recuperating. The Storey reunion was held lately at the Winthrop Ball Park Pavillion. It is always a lively time with the many musical talents of the Storey clan. Plenty of folks, plenty of food and plenty of music made for a wonderful afternoon. Our get well wishes go to Wayne Todd who has undergone heart surgery last week. We hope he is coming along well. Our condolences to the Beuerman family on the passing of Kevin Beuerman. The son of Bonnie (Elliott) Beuerman and the late Dennis Beuerman. He will be missed by his siblings Michelle, Paul and Kurt and their families and special friend Genn. Our sympathies to the family and the extended families. Returning from an east coast vacation are Rick and Margaret McInroy and Ed McClure. They were away for two weeks and enjoyed really nice weather- although they need rain out there, They travelled by motor home and went to PEI, New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula. They travelled via the U.S. through Boston and report the roads are really good. They crossed at Montreal, Quebec for the journey home. While away they toured PEI and report seeing many interesting and beautiful sites. They were told the crops are about three weeks behind this year. They had double the snowfall, just over 18 feet last winter, to put seeding behind. The drive to Gaspé is one of the top 20 scenic tours in the world and Ed agrees. It was beautiful. They also enjoyed the Magnetic Hill, where it looks like you are backing up the hill, and the Bay of Fundy. It has the biggest tide change in the world – 34 feet every six hours. Ed was amazed at the look of the 13-kilometre Confederation Bridge and the technology it must have taken to build it. They report it was an excellent trip and an enjoyable time together. Our condolences to Art Bolton and family on the passing of his wife, Marie Bolton. She will be missed by children Carl and Jan and their families. Our sympathies to all. Congratulations to Mike Rammeloo and Chrissy Dilworth on their marriage on Saturday. They were married on the family farm and had a small intimate affair. Congrats to the couple. Our sympathies to Jennifer and Ed Vellenga on the passing of her father Sidney Martin of Listowel. Our condolences to the families. The Walton Raceway held a mudbog on Sunday with a fantastic turnout of over 100 drivers. By the looks of the many vehicles passing through town, there was plenty of mud and they must have had a good time. Many Brussels, Walton and area folks hopefully had a chance to see Jean Bewley while she was in town. Jean and daughters Brenda and Mary, stayed at The Gray’s Bed and Breakfast for the weekend while here. They attended the Bowman reunion in Bayfield on Saturday and stayed with some of the relatives for more of a visit. They went to the Community Church service in Brussels on Sunday and seen many old friends and report it was a wonderful service. Jean will spend a few days with Mary in Bolton and return to her home in Airdrie on Thursday. Nice to see you, Jean!
