He raised the most money for the Blyth BIA, but soon learned that “winning” the contest was a relative term, as he puckered up and kissed this pig’s rear- end. Knott applied lipstick, albeit sloppily, and checked himself out (note the mirror in his left hand) before the big moment. Eagerly anticipating the meeting of Knott’s lips to a particularly ornery pig’s rear-end were Roger Hopper, left, and Citizen Editor, and fellow Kiss the Pig contestant Shawn Loughlin. Set for Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Belgrave Community Centre, the event was established by the centre’s board, which wanted to create a unique celebration for Belgrave. Organizer Trish MacQueen said she had approached the board two years ago with an idea for this event and she is happy to be part of making it happen now. She also said the event should offer something for everyone. The event will feature the following activities: • Beverage garden. • Chainsaw carving competition, demonstration and auction. • A vintage car show. • Food vendors. • A Remote Control (RC) demonstration. • Vendors’ booths. • Artist showcase and sale. • A farmers’ market. • Live stage performances. • A children’s area. • A battle of the bands. • A dinner and dance with live and DJ music. Tickets for the dinner and dance are $25 for individuals, $40 for couples and $10 for tickets just for Blyth’s third annual Streetfest, hosted by the BIA, was held on the village’s main street over the weekend and it was the best yet according to organizer Lorna Fraser. “Everyone was impressed,” she said in an interview with The Citizen. “The weather was good and everything was great.” Featuring vendors, events for children and a stage with music and entertainment all afternoon on Saturday, July 25, Streetfest originally started as Buskerfest as a means of welcoming a camping group to the village, however the event has taken on a life of its own. Fraser said that this year marked the first in which she was having to turn away vendors and entertainers because the event was full. She said she had bands and musicians calling up as late as Friday asking for a chance to play but she just couldn’t fit everyone in. Those who did play the venue, however, were happy. “The entertainers were impressed, especially with the sound,” she said. “One said that he hadn’t seen that kind of professional setup outdoors before.” The vendors were all pleased with the day as well, according to Fraser, who said that several had come great distances to be a part of it. She said that there were vendors scheduled from Owen Sound and Lucknow. One of the high-points for the entertainment is the Kiss a Pig competition which Fraser said created some priceless moments. “We raised just under $500,” she said. “All the participants were good sports about it.” The pig was brought by Roger Hopper who ended up holding the The Citizen Celebrating 30 Years 1985~2015 By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Continued on page 14 Continued on page 19
