quite an accomplishment,” Jeff said.
Through various forms of
fundraising, the Fire Riders’ 11
members raised just under $37,000
for the Princess Margaret Cancer
Centre in Toronto – an amount that
includes donations from a number of
local service clubs and firefighters
associations, as well as many private
donors.
As announced at the event’s
opening ceremonies, 4,853 riders
raised over $19 million for the
centre this year.
As far as the future is concerned,
Jeff said he would participate in the
Ride to Conquer Cancer again in a
heartbeat, saying it was something
he’ll never forget.
“There was an elderly gentleman
standing out in the rain all day
cheering riders on and there
were kids [fighting cancer] thanking
us along the route – seeing
things like that really strengthened
my resolve to finish,” Jeff
said. “When you watch any videos
about the Ride to Conquer Cancer,
they always said ‘it’s not a ride,
it’s a life experience’ and it totally
is. It’s hard to convey that to
people, but it truly is a life-changing
experience.”
The Huron Bruce NDP
nomination is on and it could be a
tight and exciting race with two solid
nominees running to be the federal
candidate for Huron- Bruce in the
October election.
Gerard Creces hails originally
from the Zurich area. He is a
journalist and musician and is well
versed in the issues that play on the
federal, provincial and municipal
stages. As a reporter with the
Goderich Signal Star and Clinton
News Record Gerard developed an
even more intimate knowledge of the
riding and its people and he is
ready to run and “take the power
back”.
Jan Johnstone has been with the
Bluewater District School Board for
many years as a trustee, as chair and
as the Ontario Public School Board’s
Association representative where
she was vice-chair of the Western
Region. She is a long-time resident
of Kincardine and a trained social
worker with experience in both
Huron and Bruce Counties. Jan also
ran as the Huron-Bruce NDP
candidate in the 1997 federal and
2014 provincial elections.
The Huron Bruce Federal NDP
nomination meeting will be held at
the MacKay Centre at the corner of
Nelson and North Streets in
Goderich on Thursday, June 25 at 7
p.m. You can access the hall from
Highway 21 at the Nelson Street
stoplights or take North Street and
drive one block from the Square. All
are welcome to attend the
nomination meeting.
Only members in good standing
with the party will receive a ballot
and be allowed to vote for the
candidate of their choice.
Ride raises $19 million for Cancer Centre
Steak profits
The Blyth Lions Club selected the Blyth-based Ride to Conquer Cancer team, the Fire Riders,
as its charity of choice earlier this month for the money raised from the club’s annual Seed
Sowers steak barbecue and social. At its meeting last Thursday, a cheque for $1,250 was
presented to the team, representing half of a single rider’s fundraising obligation of $2,500.
Lion Chris Lee, left, personally made the presentation to Jeff Josling, right, the captain of the
team and a firefighter with the Fire Department of North Huron. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
