TRY CLASSIFIED Continued from page 1 $150,000 that goes towards it every year could maybe be spent in more effective ways. “I can’t see the worth in it,” McGrath said. “I see the odd store going up, but is that worth $150,000 a year?” McGrath clarified that he was not taking shots at Economic Development Officer Jan Hawley with his comments, just that he didn’t necessarily think the department is one Huron East needs. With the provincial government cutting Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) money year after year, McGrath said that Huron East needs to save money wherever it can and perhaps economic development is simply a luxury the municipality can no longer afford. He used a grocery store analogy to drive his point home, saying that if he is strapped for cash, he buys milk, bread and eggs at the grocery store and leaves the ice cream in the freezer. He said that with the cuts that have already happened, and will continue to happen, council can’t justify standing pat any longer. McGrath said that if council isn’t going to be a part of the “solution” then the municipality will be part of the problem, passing on high tax increases to the ratepayers. McGrath said that it may not be necessary for Huron East to completely abolish its economic development department, but perhaps just scale it back 50 per cent. Mayor Bernie MacLellan suggested that with a number councillors also serving as members on the Huron East Economic Development Board, it made sense to get their input as part of the conversation as well. “I think we should put it on the agenda [for the June 2 meeting] and [Economic Development Board members] should come back with comments,” he said.
