When the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre needed roof repairs, they were paid for out of the centre’s general funds, rather than a special capital contribution from council. Diehl said that if some community centre managers are able to make do with their budgets, while others aren’t, it is unfair to those who do, at least in the public’s opinion. Diehl said that when residents read about the budget in local media, it creates the impression that the centres are unable to live within their budgets, when some managers are able to do just that. “In the public eye, it falls back to the manager,” Diehl said. “It unfortunate and it’s not fair, but that’s the way society is.” Michiels recommended increases of $23,071 and $18,585 for the Brussels, Morris and Grey and Seaforth and District Community Centres respectively, in order to be equitable to all three centres. She had proposed this before, but council had turned it down. Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight said that the special levy increases to help with the centres’ deficits enables the municipality to recoup some funds from neighbouring municipalities like West Perth and Morris-Turnberry. As a result of several changes to the second draft of the budget, however, Michiels said that the tax rate increase will now be slightly lower than had originally been anticipated. With an overall tax rate increase proposed at approximately five-and- a-half per cent, the new tax increase is 4.91 per cent, which includes a municipal levy increase of 9.8 per cent – the first proposed municipal budget came with a proposed 11 per cent municipal tax rate increase. Michiels will now be presenting council the final draft of the 2015 budget at a public meeting scheduled for May 5 where a motion to officially adopt the budget will be before council. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the municipal office in Seaforth. HE budget set to be presented on May 5 Up for auction The Maitland Conservation Foundation held its annual spring dinner and auction on Saturday night at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. There was a silent auction, guest speakers and plenty of other activities to keep people occupied, including a live auction, which was facilitated by auctioneer Dave Johnston, left, and Joe Vulders.
