play. Winners were: first, Deb Burch
and John Stadelmann; second,
Wayne Smith and Sheron
Stadelmann; ladies’ high, Marlene
Rutledge, 132; men’s high, Wayne,
120. The wind-up for the Thursday
night league is April 9 when a fun
evening of games, food and prizes
will be held.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by a good crowd
of 25. This Friday there is no supper
as it is Good Friday and the Branch
will be closed.
Comrade Jo-Ann attended the
financial seminar in Listowel on
Saturday morning.
It concerned the upcoming
changes that provincial command
would like all Branches to have
standardize reporting procedures.
There will be more information
and meetings as the program
progresses.
The Huron County Dart Challenge
was held at the Branch on Sunday
afternoon.
There were 35 darters taking part
in the day’s play. The Branch had
member Monica Richardson looking
after the bar and Daisy Wong looked
after the food for the day’s
event.
Ron Schmidt finished second in
the singles competition.

Brussels branch hosts dart event
Seaforth Harmony Kings earn award with local talent
Well, here it is the first of April
and it is not feeling much like spring.
The snow was going away nicely
until Sunday evening when a
blizzard of snow moved into the
area. I guess we could say that when
March came in like a lamb, it was
bound to go out like a lion. Lots of
cold wind to contend with as well.
The knowledge that it has to get
better makes it easier to tolerate. The
end of the snowmobile season looks
to be here. Some trail stakes have
been taken down and I’m sure the
rest will soon follow. It seemed to be
a good year for those with sleds and
hopefully the Brussels-Walton
Trailblazers feel it was a good year
too.
Before the weekend blizzard,
some farmers had been able to
spread manure on the fields, while
others are busy in their shops getting
equipment ready for the field work.
All of a sudden, the big push will be
on to start seeding for the 2015
growing season. If you look closely,
you can see spots of bright green
grass showing in spots on the lawn
and in the fields, but most still looks
very brown and lifeless. Warm rain
and warm temperatures will help a
lot.
Congratulations to the Seaforth
Harmony Kings, which includes
Brussels members Jim Lee, Eric
Prescott and Brian Keller, for
winning a trophy in a competition in
London recently. They won the
London Connection Trophy at the
Western Ontario Chorus
Competition. Other familiar names
in the group from the area are John
Elligsen and Bill and Dave
Campbell. The trophy is on display
at Cinnamon Jim’s.
Returning from a trip to the
southern United States on their
motorcycles are George and Harry
Zwep. They travelled for a week’s
tour of the Smokey Mountain area
through North and South Carolina,
Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee.
In North Carolina, they drove the
“Tail of the Dragon” which is a
famous biking road with 318 curves
in 11 miles. They also travelled
through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel
which goes through the mountains.
There were many beautiful, curvy
roads and they had good weather
with only one cool, rainy day.
Welcome back to the Zwep boys.
There were 24 darters showing
their stuff at the Cranbrook dart
night at the Cranbrook Hall on
Wednesday evening. On the second
last evening of play, teams two, three
and six each captured four games out
of six. They consisted of team -
Murray Houston, Gayle Speiran and
Pete Lefor ( for the third week in a
row), team - Brad Speiran, Doug
Evans and Jane Zwep and team -
Ernie Lewington, Teuni Smith and
Steve Bowers. Winners were: high
lady, Karen Bowles, 135 and high
man, Murray Houston and George
Zwep, tied, 140. The lucky winner of
the night was Jim Blake.
Audrey Hackwell is recovering
nicely after having a fall and
suffering a concussion. The girls
have been home to help and this
weekend was no different. Pam, and
Patricia both arrived and it’s busy,
busy, busy with lots of chatting. I
dropped in for a few minutes and
managed a giggle or two with the
three ladies.
The month of March birthday
babies concludes with Ken Dalton,
Andrea Gingerich, Becky Laverty
Chadwick, Judy Shortreed, Weston
Murray, Connor denDekker, Heidi
Wey, Nicole Williamson Murray,
John Baan, Brandy Leslie and Jack
McLachlan. The start of April and
the April Fool’s babies include
Shirley Clark, Matt Lee and Lily
Fincham and then continue with
Peter Bennett, Mary McCall, Pam
Carter Cummings and Susan Yan Yu
Watson. Happy birthday to all!

affect our environment. Water
consumption and how we add to
pollution were part of the River Day.
Saturday was Earth Day, held since
2007 to remind us how dependent
we are on electricity. As part of the
awareness, we were encouraged to
shut everything down for one hour.
It’s the old refrain – what good will
that do, my bit doesn’t count and on
and on. Toronto Hydro tracked 3.5
per cent less usage on Saturday
evening. Everything we do affects
another, perhaps not obviously but
the effect is felt somewhere. That
plastic bit you tossed may be
ingested by an animal, that cup will
be roadside garbage and the light left
on adds to the stress of shared
utilities. So as we move into spring,
stop and rethink your part in helping
keep the environment healthy for our
grandkids. Back to the basics of
reduce, reuse and recycle for a better
world.
While we’re on that subject –
when you donate things to any of the
thrift shops in our community, think
hard about who will buy your
treasure. If you bought it in a dollar
store and you’ve had it for awhile –
it will probably not sell at a store
again. Clothes need to be in very
good shape or we put them in the
bargain bin and only so many can be
cut into rags. Garage sale items are
another issue for secondhand stores,
if you’ve had your sale and you’re
ready to dispose, please be kind. so
thanks to the folks who put a couple
of bag tags in with their donations,
we appreciate them. Think, would
you buy it?
Coffee and bake sale at the United
Church on Saturday morning will
save you from baking for your Easter
company.
So as the seriousness of Holy Week
passes, we move into celebration
mode as new life is seen in flowers
and eggs and Easter Sunday.
Happy Easter!

Harder than it looks
A special program was held at North Woods Elementary School last week to show students
how those differently-abled individuals see and interact with the world. Seeing through the
eyes of someone with low or reduced vision are, from left: Christopher Pennington, Lucas
Holthuysen and Andon Piper. (Denny Scott photo)
