A BIG THANK YOU
from the
Brussels Optimist Club
The Brussels Optimist Club would like to thank everyone
who donated items and came out to buy items at our
Spring Dinner and Auction. Over $22,000 was raised to
support Community Betterment and Autism Ontario
Huron-Perth. Special thanks to Cardiff Catering for an
excellent meal, and to Tanya McArter and Staff
for an excellent job decorating the hall.
It makes us very proud to have the support of a great
small community.
Thanks again,
Brussels Optimist Club
Restoration
After being briefed on the project last week, the Brussels
Legion decided to donate $250 to the Brussels Leo Club for
the young group’s plan to restore the tennis courts at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. Brussels

At the Branch
Youth centre fundraiser coming
The Brussels Youth Centre, a part
of the North Huron branch of the
Youth Unlimited group, is hosting a
fundraising gala event at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre on April 11.
A special committee has been
struck to run the gala event, which
will include dinner as well as several
other events and activities.
Committee member Dawn MacLeod
said the event is something people
should be looking forward to.
Aside from a pig roast for dinner,
the event will feature a pie auction
as well as a silent auction, which
will include items donated from the
community. A raffle will also be
held with the grand prize being a
custom built garden shed or play
house.
There will also be a square
dancing event run by committee
member Kathy Procter.
“We will be having David Cavan
Fraser there to provide music,”
MacLeod said. “We’re also having
Ben Lobb’s father Richard [who is
an auctioneer] run the pie auction.
It’s going to be a really fun evening.”
Tickets for the dinner are $18 for
adults and $10 for children, while
children under six are free.
“The auctions are free to attend,”
MacLeod explained. “You can walk
Holy Week looks at behaviour
If you’re with the church crowd,
you’ll know that we are in Holy
Week, moving through the stories in
the Bible that were set many, many
years ago. In our time, hopefully we
are seeing how the same things are
still happening today. Services have
been held all week with participation
shared as the Ministerial folks look
after the details. The week has been
focused on human behaviour, deceit,
aggression and lies, but in the end
love comes through. Easter arrives.
One of our community ladies has
died. Helen Wheeler will be
remembered as the encourager and
supporter of many people over her
lifetime. Her sweet smile and quiet
manner made her a joy to be with.
She was a neighbour of the Watsons
and Alma tells a neat story about
Helen and a field of turnips.
Florence, Helen’s mom, lived across
from us when I came to Brussels and
the two of them were a good
example of serenity that I hoped was
catching - NOT? Visits to Helen in
Huronlea were always so welcoming
and her quick mind added many
details to stories being shared. So
farewell to one fine lady, Helen
Wheeler.
As we prepare for spring, March
had a couple of days set aside for us
to stop and think about how we
Legion donates to Leo project
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The general meeting of Brussels
Legion Branch was held at the
Branch on Tuesday evening. Special
guests were Sean Mitchell, president
of the Brussels Leo Club and Kathy
Nicol, Lion Club sponsor. The Leos
have undertaken the project of
revitalizing the tennis courts at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre and had asked
for a donation. Sean explained what
the group is planning to do and the
Legion voted to donate $250 towards
it. A cheque was presented to Sean
by President Jo-Ann McDonald.
Other matters of business included
an application for a new member
which was approved, the carpet has
been steam cleaned, the old fridge
needs to be moved and one of the
Branch’s coolers needs repair. There
are three catering events for April
and three fish fry dinners booked for
April. Information on an enabling
grant was received and the
accessibility committee will look
into a possible application.
