Janice Schmidt of Lucknow pled
guilty to one charge of impaired
driving and two charges of failing to
comply with her probation in
Wingham court on Feb. 12.
Huron County Crown Attorney
Laura Grant said that Schmidt’s
troubles began on May 16, 2014,
when at around 11:30 p.m.
Wingham Police were patrolling the
town and spotted a vehicle with a
temporary validation sticker.
In order to check if the sticker was
still valid or not, police conducted a
traffic stop. As a result, police found
Schmidt to be driving with a male
passenger with whom, as a result of
Schmidt’s probation order, she was
not allowed to communicate.
On Dec. 22, 2014, while
investigating a separate incident,
police were informed of a single-
vehicle traffic incident at the
Wingham Legion just after 3:30
a.m.
An employee of North Huron
Township informed police that a car
had struck a guardrail in front of the
Legion and the driver was in the
process of trying to get the car
“unstuck” from its position, Grant
said.
When police arrived, they
observed Schmidt and upon further
examination found that she smelled
of alcohol, she was unsteady on her
feet and her eyes were glassy and
bloodshot. After police questioning,
Schmidt admitted to consuming
alcohol that night.
Upon arrival at the police station,
Schmidt registered readings of 113
and 104 milligrams of alcohol in
100 millilitres of blood and was
charged with impaired driving.
Grant also informed the court that
Schmidt was still on probation at the
time of the incident, violating that
term as a result.
Hunter imposed a $1,000 fine and
a $300 victim fine surcharge for the
charge of impaired driving. The
charge also comes along with a 12-
month driving prohibition.
For the two charges of failing to
comply with the terms of her
probation, Hunter issued a fine of $1
on each.
OVER 80
Gordon Fritz of Wingham pled
guilty to one charge of operating a
motor vehicle with over 80
milligrams of alcohol in 100
millilitres of blood in connection
with an incident on Nov. 23, 2014.
Fritz was approached by area OPP
officers just after 3 a.m. that
morning, standing in a driveway
behind his vehicle which police had
just witnessed him driving.
He was brought to the police
station for further alcohol screening
where he registered readings of 140
and 130 milligrams of alcohol in
100 millilitres of blood and was
then charged by police.
Hunter imposed a $1,000 fine
plus the mandated victim fine
surcharge of $300, as well as a 12-
month driving prohibition. Fritz
said he needed just one month to
pay the fine, adding that he hoped to
take advantage of the Interlock
program, which, if Fritz is eligible,
could reduce the driving prohibition
from 12 months to three.
