Morris-Turnberry is subsidizing it,”
Councillor Jim Nelemans
summarized. “If you get buried in
Wingham, we’re not subsidizing it,
so you’re paying more out of
pocket.”
Kelly wondered if council
shouldn’t qualify the donation and
clarify that its to cover people who
live in Morris-Turnberry only, but
Gowing said that was the opposite
of what this cemetery was trying to
do.
“We’re trying to get away from
labelling people by area,” he said.
“People may spend their working
years in Morris-Turnberry then
retire to Goderich then want to be
buried here. We’re trying to get
away from who is local and who
isn’t.”
Gowing later went on to say North
Huron was going in the opposite
direction and had wording in their
internment policy regarding who is
and who isn’t local.
Council eventually agreed to pay
the outstanding bill from 2014 and,
going forward, pay 20 per cent of
the operational deficit of the
cemetery which, in 2014, would
have been approximately $2,000.
They made a motion to that effect,
including the option to review the
deal every year at budget time.
M-T to support Brussels cemetery
Local darter marks perfect game at Cranbrook Hall
I hope everyone was bundled up
last week because it was cold! The
forecast is for cold weather all week
and hopefully when it is over, the
warm weather will come. It will only
be four weeks until spring, so we can
hope.
Jeff and Shannon McGavin were
the hosts for a gathering of the
Johnston families. They had their
traditional gathering for Matt
Johnston and his fiancée Rachel.
They live in B.C. and they were here
for a visit before their marriage later
this year. Relatives from Brussels,
Listowel, Guelph and surrounding
areas attended the afternoon
gathering. The group enjoyed the
visit and plenty of munchies. Matt is
the son of Terry and Teresa
Johnston.
The Brussels birthday girls
gathered again to celebrate the
February birthdays. The birthday
girls of the month include Bev
Palmer and Marci Bremner. The
group of 18 enjoyed a delicious
chicken breast dinner at JR’s. The
ladies helping to celebrate the day
included Nora Stephenson, Audrey
and Betty Cardiff, Nelva Scott, Betty
Campbell, Isabel Wheeler, Dale
Chesher, Jane Hall, Laura Barbour,
Lois McCutcheon, Edna McLellan,
Marie McCutcheon, Leona
Armstrong, Joan Bernard, Sandra
Cable and Merle Cousins.
It is reading week for many
college and university students and
many are coming home for the
break. Shayna Melady is home from
Halifax for her break. Cathy and Pat
or mom and dad to her and
grandparents Neil and Marie
McGavin and the rest of the Melady
and McGavin families will be happy
to have a visit with her.
Valentine’s Day was a nasty day
for those who wanted to travel very
far. There were a few cancellations
of events around the town and area
with roads closed as well.
Celebrating birthdays on Valentine’s
are a couple of folks around the area.
Betty Graber Watson had a few folks
drop in to wish her happy birthday in
spite of the weather. Betty Glanville
celebrated her “brown envelope”
birthday and had many family
members and friends drop in to wish
her well, in spite of the weather.
Our sympathies are extended to
the McLachlan family on the passing
of Bob McLachlan. He will be
missed by his children June, Jack,
Lois, Glen, Carol and Don and their
families. Bob was a very nice
gentleman who loved to come to the
Legion fish fry dinners. We would
always have a nice little visit
whenever he came. Our condolences
to the McLachlan families.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had 19
brave a very cold evening to shoot
darts at the Cranbrook Hall. It
proved to be a memorable night for
the group. The high lady was Pat
Gillis hitting 94 and the seasoned
player, Brad Speiran, shooting the
perfect score of 180!
Congratulations to Brad! Brad has
been playing darts for at least 40
years and this is the first time he has
accomplished this amazing score.
The best team of the night winning
five out of six games, was Teuni
Smith and Steve Bowers. The lucky
draw winner was Barb Currie a new
guest and maybe future player.
Rick and I enjoyed a Christmas
present on Valentine’s weekend. We
went to London to see Jersey Boys at
the RBC Theatre at the Budweiser
Gardens. It was wonderful! We
enjoyed the story of the beginnings,
struggles and almost downfall of the
group. The great musical hits of The
Four Seasons and Frankie Valli were
sung throughout the performance.
We managed to see other local folks
attending including Sandy Huether,
Bev Palmer and two other friends
from Belgrave, Paul and Marj
Krauter from Listowel and Barry
and MaryBeth Niven from Mitchell.
Our neighbours Jim and Evelyn
Blake went earlier in the week and
Don and Jill Sholdice had a nasty
trip down Saturday night for the
show. The show was great and
everyone’s comments agreed.
The Huether family of Walton had
a scare of a lifetime one night last
week. The carbon monoxide
detectors in John and Lisa’s home
both went off. The family left the
house immediately and called for
assistance. Members of the Fire
Department of North Huron arrived
and with the necessary safety
equipment, checked the house for
the silent, odourless gas. They
checked every room and the exhaust
outlets and found no signs of any
problems. The family is grateful for
the assistance of the local
department, who gave them a new
detector for the home. They are
replacing the ones in their home with
new ones. They are reminding
everyone to have detectors on every
floor, replace old ones and get out if
they go off! We are happy everything
turned out alright for the Huether
family.
Congratulations to Scott and
Sherri McNaughton on the birth of a
son. They have welcomed baby Ben
to their family and big sister Leah is
very excited. The very happy
grandparents are Art and Joan
McNaughton and Pauline Bennett is
pleased to have another great-
grandchild.
Returning from a wonderful
vacation down south are Fred and
Heidi McClure. They went with
friends from Mitchell, Ed and Rose
Kraal. The foursome had beautiful
rooms facing the ocean at the resort
in Negril, Jamaica. Great hot
weather, good food and just a
relaxing time on beautiful, sandy
beaches, was enjoyed. They went to
watch the cliff divers demonstration
on one outing and Heidi reports it
was amazing. Welcome home!
Our condolences to Gary and
Heather Dauphin on the passing of
Gary’s father, Joe Dauphin. He had
lived in Chatham, but had resided in
Ridgetown as of late. Our
sympathies to the Dauphin families.
Celebrating their 45th wedding
anniversary on the weekend were
George and Emily Cousins. They
had dinner with Max and Barb
Watts, who were their attendants for
the wedding. The foursome had
dinner at the Crossroads Restaurant.
Congrats to the couple.

Duff’s future decided March 10
Duff’s United Church held a
congregational meeting on Tuesday,
Feb. 10. The meeting had been
called to vote on a motion
concerning the future of the church.
There were 30 members of the
congregation present. Rev. Sandra
Cable opened the meeting with a
prayer.
The annual meeting was chaired
by Gloria Wilbee with Teresa Baan
recording the minutes. The reports
were presented and passed. Rev.
Cable chaired the rest of the meeting
and the motion concerning the future
of Duff’s was presented. Discussion
occurred and during the discussions,
it was pointed out that an important
point of procedure had not been
followed. The outcome of the
discussion was to postpone the vote
until a future date. The discussion
continued and an amendment to the
motion was presented . The motion
to be voted on is “Duff’s United
Church will close on a date and we
ask the Huron Perth Presbytery to
disband the congregation once all
the property matters and
disbursement of any funds are
completed”.
If the motion is passed, a date will
be discussed for ending services.
This meeting also gave those present
the opportunity to express their ideas
and opinions on the future of the
church. All members of the
congregation will be informed of the
upcoming meeting, on March 10 at 7
p.m.
The notice of the meeting will be
put in the church bulletin every
week, the phone relay in the annual
report will be used, Teresa Baan will
e-mail all those registered with e-
mail and I will remind all again.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Mary Baan, John

Glanville, Krista Fraser, Val Pethick,
