Columnist remembers last year’s water problems “Oh, what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful…”, with the sun shining and the sky clear, that old show tune keeps running in my head as I get ready to write this morning. There’s nothing like a beautiful February day. Did you ever stop to think about the zoos we have in our backyards? We have a variety of pretty birds busy at the feeders, some folks lucky enough to enjoy a pair of cardinals outside their window for dinner. Then we have the acrobatic squirrels, comfortable in a variety of positions trying their luck at each feeder. The bunnies are also out and about, all for our enjoyment as we take the opportunity to enjoy nature as it is. A life well lived was celebrated on Saturday as friends and family helped Sheila say a public goodbye to a good friend, Brian Prescott. When someone dies, each person affected by that death holds a special memory. As the reality of death, the finality of it takes hold, it is so often those memories that get you through the tough days. As friends in community, it is our job to share those stories and make the worthiness of that life remain important. Brian was part of an informal group here in Brussels, labelled the Culture Club. Every Monday breakfast was their agenda, at a variety of eating places over the years, the other days, coffee and conversation was the only order of business. Brian shared many good memories with this group. For me it was the smile and twinkle in his eye. Farewell Brian. Winter always needs a little help to make it pleasant for everyone, well almost everyone, and so both Valentine’s day and Heritage/Family Day have become events to celebrate as the winter passes. I truly love both of these, but for me, this winter I’m adding Water day, no, make it the whole month. To celebrate this year’s birthday I’ll have water on tap. So I’m celebrating the nice road crews of last summer. Oh life is good. This year I can look at the snow on the patio and think how pretty and not; like last year, see potential for toilet flushes. Happy Birthday to the Valentine’s boys in my life, Jack, Ken, Clif and Ethan. Happy Valentine’s Day and enjoy it with flowers and candy. Bye Now, Betty G.W. NEWS FROM BRUSSELS Strike! Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) Local 21 held several pickets throughout the county last week to protest a wage freeze in the proposed new contract for Community Care Access Centre health professionals who are seeking a 1.4 per cent increase. Strikers were in Clinton on Wednesday, Blyth (above) on Thursday and Wingham on Monday. (Denny Scott photo) By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY At the Branch Lack of propane delays dinner By Jo-Ann McDonald It was a normal week around the Brussels Legion Branch but a busy weekend. The Thursday night darts started the weekend with 12 players taking aim at the boards. Winners were: first, Deb Burch and Sheron Stadelmann; second, Daisy Wong and John Stadelmann; high shot, Gord Jacklin and John, 114. The Stadelmanns were “hot shots” of the night since returning from their two- week vacation down south. The Friday night supper had the usual crowd of about 20 enjoy the roast pork supper. The supper was delayed until just after 6 p.m. because of the unexpected lack of propane. Luckily, the meat was cooked and with an emergency call to Sparlings in less than an hour, the kitchen was back in business. We appreciate the patience of the diners. This week’s menu is sausage and sauerkraut.
