People think they etre celebrating an historical event. B
really aren't. you know. ,No one hinters the exact date of esus
birth. The primitive church didn't Oren celebrate Christmas.
Erentually the chard settled me December 25th as a way to
baptize an already popular, pagan holiday to celebrate the fact
that , the depth of winter was 1Wer Mid ihr days Were getting-

People at Christmas time are kind of funny. 'kind of sad,
kind of .lonesoine, Some are really happy no matter what
rcvsons. Are these people really facing up to what Christmas
is really all about? 1 wonder.
have a copy of the Revised Standard Version of the Bible
on my. desk, and so 1 opened. it and began to look through it.
remembering what these people had said about Christmas.
Here arc some' of the passages I found.
I found_ an _expression of the wonder and humility of a
mother expeckin her, Fitt child, hut a child unlike others:
And Mary said.- ' •
"My soul magnifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices sit Gen! my Saylor.
for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.
For behold. henceforth all
geoerar N trill Cali NeSSell ;
For he who is mighty has done great things for me.
and holy is his name . . (luke 1:•16-19)
I found the simple. moving story of Christ-'s birth:
-A/1;i Joseph also went up front Galilee. /r the city of Na z a-
reth. to Judea, to the city of florid. which is called lletlilehern.
beeause he tea!, 41.1 the house and lineage /timid. 10 be enrollee!
with Mary. his betrothed. echo was with child. And while they
were there, the time rattle /or her to be delirered..-Ind she gave
birth to her first-born SOe and wrapped him in swaddling elinlifs
and laid him in rr manger. berall•Ne there was no rooin her them
in the inn." (Luke 2:4-7)
And furt, ber. on I lOuild the joyous messiwe of the angels
to the shepherds on the hillside outside Bethlehem:
b r i ng '111.1 glind nell:S grew joy which will e • to all
people; for to Y101 is born this day , Sarior. who is Christ
the Lord." (Luke 2:11-12)
But perhaps, most important of all, I fottm,1 the story of
Christ's life. a life which changed the history (if .the world and
of the relationships between men. He said:
"Blessed are you poor. for yours is the kingdom of God."
"Blessed are Y410 that hunger now. for yeth shall be satisfied."
"Blessed are :you that creep now. for you shall laugh."
"Blessed ore Y00 0/100 Men hale you. and when they exclude

the Son of man,' Rejoice in that day, oar! leap for joy, for be-
