The year of the hot corner
Rich Hebner, Bobby Ether-
idge, Bobby Murcer, Coco La-
boy, Annie Otis, Bill Sudakis,
and Bill Melton. .
Ever heard' of them? -
If you're a baseball fan you'll
probably recognize a couple of
names. But even the most rabid
baseball fan probably would
strike out if asked to .associate
the above• names with major
league clubs.
However these seven athletes .
have a great deal in common;
all are third basemen, all are
rookies, and they represent the
biggest influx of new players
at one position in the last 100
years, which in itself is inter-
esting, as this is baseball's 100th
anniversary.
Perhaps the most exciting of
the "new breed" is Sudakis, who
is rapidly becoming one of the
most daring ballplayers to ever
wear a Los Angles Dodger uni-
form.
Roger Craig, a coach with
the San Diego Padres, summed
up the brilliant rookie'S ap-
:prowl' to baseball this way:
'Sudakis has more guts than
any man I've ,ever played with,
against , or coached."
Bobby Murcer is 22, comes
froth. Oklahoma was signed by
the same scout who signed Mic-
key Mantle 20 years ago, and
uses Mick's add locker.
Also, in the same tradition of
all New York Yankee stars; he
keeps- the top button of his uni-
form unbuttoned.
Montreal Expos drafed Coco
Laboy 57th. They were allowed'
to select 60 players in all. For
10 years Laboy played in the
iniriors in the St, Louis Cardin-
als' system.
A National League player says
of Laboy: "He waits to play
every day and is a 100 per-
cent player. He got his nick-
name because he drank a lot of
cocoa in Puerto 'Rico. lie is go-
ing to surprise a lot of people."
Manager Larry Shepard of the
Pittsburgh Pirates looks at Rich
Hebner, his neophyte third sack-
er and grins: "That Hebner is
amazing. God bless him."
The 21 year-old rookie turn-
ed down $10,000 offer to play
hockey for the Boston Bruins,
accepting $38,000 from Pittsbur-
gh.
Amos Otis is only 22, and he
is fast, very fast.
In his first game with the
New York Mets he got a pair
of infield hits on ground balls,
one of which would have been
a routine Out with almost any
other player.
During the off-season when-
ever the Mets talked trade, the
other clubs always mentioned
Otis. That was when the Mets
quit talking.
Bobby Etheridge gat a hit on
Opening Day, made an error,
was accused of misplaying an-
other ball, and suffered a groin
injury the next day.
But. now he's back, and the
San Francisco Giants are' glad
he came back. In five minor
league seasono- he has never
hit below .278 and once knock-
ed i 107 runs at Fresno.
Binh Melton is the name Chic-
ago White Sox manager Al Lo-
pez covets. Melton can hit the
long ball.
In spring training he batted
.341, collected 14 extra-base
blows, five of them homers and
knocked in 23 runs,
In a game against Minnesota,
Dean Chance gunned a fastball
at Melton, sending the rookie
into the dirt Chance's next pit-
ch struck out Melton; but the
brash rookie's bat went sailing
through the' air toward the pit-
cher's mound,
Chance jumped out of the•
way.
ChanCe said, later'. "I didn't
mean to hit him. The ball just
got away from me."
When told of Chance's re-
mark, Melton snarled: "Sure,
the bat just 'got away from me,
too,"
This is the type of attitude of
this year's crop of third base-
men. They're here to stay, and
undoubtedly, this will prove to
be a vintage year — the Year of
the. Third Basemen.
