Maple Leafs are ready
The Toronto Maple Leafs are
finally primed and -.ready to
accelerateinto the Stanley Cup
playoffs.
General-manager and coach,
George "Punch" Imlach, has fi-
nally acquired the needed im-
petus to gain a playoff berth.
During the greatest Maple Leaf
rebuilding year in a decade or .
so, Imlach has scrapped his
sentimental thinking and be-
come a realist.
When his team was winning
and coming close, Imlach de-
fied all the odds by sticking
with his leg weary veterans.
Unbelievable individual efforts
by the oldtimers produced up-
sets and dramatic wins in the
Frank Merriwell fashion.
But he can no longer rely on
the Sawchucks, Bowers, Stan-
leys, Kellys, Banns and Bath-
gates to make the key play.
Out with the old, in with the
new!
Imlach has always been a
subscriber to the rough and
ready brand of hockey, although
his teams have been somewhat
handicapped recently with the
timid personnel wearing the
blue and white. He has preach-
ed violence, but often his serfs
have been restricted to verbal
violence as, perhaps, visions of
pensions danced in their heads.
When you're 31 going 40 it's a
logical conclusion that there's
little need to -charge recklessly
into the corner when you have
to barge through a couple of
elbow pads and sticks with
their butt end pointed at you.
Ayoiding this physical con-
tact, many of the Leafs have
surivived an extra three or four
seasons.
But °today Imlach doesn't
have to contend with skaters
waltzing their way to a pension.
He has a new breed of hockey
players in Toronto, swashbuck-
; ling I-don't-give-a-damn perfor-
• mers, ready to engage in any
form of violence.
• A few games ago Howie ▪ Young of the Chicago Black
' Hawks ran amuck,. sending To-
ronto players sprawling with
bull-like charges. The Leafs
backed off, and lost.
A week later Chicago came
back.
Late in the second period,
Black Hawk coach Billy Reay
sent Young out "to "stir things
up." His ,team was trailing -2-1.
Imlach didn't have to say a
word. His players did the talk-
ing on the bench and physical-
ly carried out thier verbal
threats of "let's get him
(Young)"
Rugged Pat Quinn, one of
Imlach's n e w breed, met
Young face-td-face at the Chi-
cago blueline. They crossed
sticks, and Quinn dropped his
gloves and stick inviting Young
to join him in a bare knuckkle'
battle. Young declined and both
players were sent off With miner
penalties.
Shortly after leaving the pen-
alty box Young picked up a
stray puck in his own end and
pivoted to, turn toward the To-
ronto side of centre ice. Quinn
took four giant strides and gave
Young an Apollo 9 blast-off.
Young crumpled and so did the
Hawk's hopes. Their giant-killer
had been felled.
From. that, point on the Leafs
defied the Hawks to meet them
in physical confrontration. The
Hawks declined, They lost.
Now Imlach has acquired Brit
Selby and Forbes Ke,nnedy from
the Philadelphia Flyers for three
fringe players. Selby is a deter-
ermined checker not opposed to
a fist-fight. Kennedy is the most
penalized forward in the Nat-
ional Hockey League.
These two join the Jim Dorey,
Pat Quinn, Mike Pelyk and Lar-
ry Mickey gang. Seven tough
guys.
Boston Bruins have remain-
ed in contention for the league
title by intimidating all opposit-
ion.' They have literally fought
their way to victories, including
triumphs over the Leafs.
From here on in the Leafs
are going to battle their way to
a few wins, and woe betide any
team which attempts to, match
them fist for fist,

So legally, you have no time.
They must be placed on your

Dear Constable Tighe: '-
I thought that there was a

he makes a little peephole in
