and a piston above the sample
moves to show any structural
changes taking place in the soil.
At present there are no plants
in the soil sample, but plants
will be included once maximum
heaving conditions are estab-
lished. Dr. Kay says that labor-
atory tests are initially more
satisfactory than field work be-
cause temperature and water ten-
sion are better controlled in the
laboratory.
Several factors other than
water temperature or tension
can be related to alfalfa
and frost heaving. Varietal dif-
ferences may affect crop
reaction. Some plant roots may
bind thei:-.-sell together, while
others may break immediately
under frost heaving conditions.
Some roots may stretch as the
soil moves, thus preventingplant
damage altogether. Professor
Kay plans experiments using dif-
ferent soil types, since many
Soils also react differently to
climactic or environmental con-
ditions.
The immediate objectives of
the program will be:
L To discover what causes
ice lenses to form in soils
under different conditions.
2. To examine the mode and
extent of frost heaving of
alfalfa under different types
of ice lens formation.
3. To study what aspects of
plant nutrition and root mor-
phology (formation) tie
closest together when there
is minimum frost heaving with
different alfalfa varieties.
Field work will begin, says
Dr. Kay, when all laboratory
tests have been successfully
completed.

Boys from Grades 5 and 6 of St. James School in Seaforth represented Huron County in
the Huron-Perth Separate School Touch Football Championship held at the recreation hall
of CFB Clinton recently. The boys from Seaforth won the game 33 - 29 and became the Huron-
Perth Champs. Shown above as they got off the bus prior to the game is the team from St.
James (wearing St. Joseph's sweaters). Perth County was represented by a team from St:
Aloysius Separate School in Stratford. (Staff Photo)

H-P Touch Football
(By Kenny Menheere
Grade 6)
A football game for the Huron-
Perth Championship was 'played
at the Clinton Air Force Base on
Friday, December 4, 1970. The
two teams competing were: Huron
County, St. James Juniors; Perth
County, St. Aloysius, Stratford.
Stratford scored the first
point on a punt. Seaforth's
Jerome Aubin got the first touch-
down to make it 7-1. It was a
fast moving game as each team
tried to make up for each point on
the other's score. Stratford had
Crops Killed As
Frost Heaves Soil
Frost heaving of the soil is
a , major contributor to alf2)fa
winterkill in some Ontario soils.
A research project started re-
cently at the University of
Guelph may help prevent future
extensive alfalfa losses through
frost heaving.
Professor B. D. Kay, Soil
Science Department, University
of Guelph, in a project Spon-
sored by the Ontario Depart-
ment of Agriculture and Food,
has designed equipment that will
create conditions for frost heav-
ing in the laboratory, and will
help define the conditions under
which frost heaving of alfalfa
and other forage species occurs.
Frost heaving, says Profes-
sor Kay, Is generally caused
when a soil surface freezes over
and dries out. This surface
drying draws up more water
from deeper in the soil. The
water freezes to form an ice lens,
which leads to local expansion
and causes the soil to break and
heave up.
Water freezes around alfalfa
roots, while the plant, crown is
carried up by the heaving soil and
left suspended and broken when
spring comes.
Professor Kay's equipment
surrounds a soil sample with
chambers through which water
is pumped at different temper-
atures. Water is also made
available to the soil sample. In-
sulating tubes convey the water
chamber temperature to the soil,
causing it to freeze or thaw. As
the soil contracts or expands,
water is drawn into it at various
tensions, creating a water table
effect. Water temperature and
the amount of water drawn into
the soil can both be recorded,
