They Don't
Believe in
fairy Ta/es ...
There once was an ugly duckling....
but he obviously didn't know these
little fellows who have just emerged
from the hatchery, and probably
don't believe in fairy tales. The duck
industry is not large in Ontario.
Per capita consumption is about
0.4 lbs per year, yet birds must be
imported to keep up with this slight
demand. Most ducks are grown to
7 1/2 or 8 weeks and then processed
and packaged on the spot. In Ontario
the largest duck producer is locateo
V
in Aurora, but there are several
smaller operations where ducks are
bred and sold as a different item on
the family meat menu. (Photograph

culture and Food).

for Dirt
They seek him here.... they seek
him there.... and they get results.
Which is important when the subject
sought is polluting residues and the
seekers are the Ontario Pesticide
Laboratory, part of the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and Food.
This laboratory checks samples of
meat, fish, vegetable, soil, water and
many other items to see if these
contain pesticide or industrial resi-
dues that may he harmful to the
health. Samples are sent in from all
over Ontario, arid the laboratory thus
obtains an overall view of the pol-
lution situation in the province, and
can provide valuable data to those
organizations concerned with en-
vironmental preservation. (Photo-
