The Huron Expositor, 1970-09-17, Page 11s. • • 0 0 Mustang Mach I • Government inspectors have reported an unusually high inci- dence of dwarf bunt ill winter wheat this year. Dr. S. G. Fushtey, Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph,• says- the last time this ' disease was • a problem to winter wheat and pedigreed seed • growers was between 1953 and 1958. Bunt can be recognized as soon as the yheat is headed out, says Dr. Fushtey, Depart- ment of Botany, as the smutted heads are a darker, blue.-green • color. Dwarf bunt differs from common bunt in that the height of the stalk is roughly half that of .either healthy wheat or wheat affected by common bunt. Dis- eased heads are about the same size as healthy•ones but are a pale color and tend to become • more curved at maturity. Diagno- sis should be confirmed by microscopic examination of the spores. Dr. Fushtey points out that the problem in controlling dwarf bunt is that spores survive in the soil for a number o f years and seed treatments in use today do not effectively protect the plants. Once the disease is discov- ered growers should' take the infected field out of winter wheat production for at least four years. Other crops may be planted in the field, however, as dwarf bunt - affects only winter wheat. . • To prevent contamination of unaffected soil, all farm, imple- ments which have been used in the contaminated field should be thoroughly cleansed to remove soil that may contain the dwarf bunt spores. 0 Dwarf Bunt Is High in Wheat The Stanley Unit U.C.W. met at the Church when Mrs. H. for, the leader, welcomed members. She read a Harvest Hymn followed by Hymn 578 and Mrs. W. Scott read Psalm 23. The lesson was given by Mrs. C. Henderson "Gods Care for His Own" followed by a prayer, offering and dedication. A prayer was given by Mrs. H. Taylor. • The roll call showed 18 mem- bers present.
