By this time the interior was a raging inferno. Donnie Fludder and storekeeper Lawri James helped Doug get the first fire hose connected. Mrs. Carol Fludder got their car away from the boulevard to park it down by the Ripley Curling rink and got her children, Tammy and Jason, out of the house. Donnie was one of those who helped Mrs. Ernie Pollock from her home just 20 to 30 feet north of the blazing hotel building. Fran and myself were out at the old homestead on the sixth - now the Jerry Huber farm - lifting some vegetables in our garden there. We were alerted to some• strange sound which turned out to be the siren on the Lucknow Fire Chief's car as it was passing , the Wes Smyth place on the fifteenth, going north to Ripley. Turning to look in the direction of the village to the northeast across the fields, there was a huge pillar of black smoke rising from the village centre and extending hundreds of feet up and drifting northward. Immediately we got into the car and up the sixth. We turned the corner at the top of the sixth hill onto the pavement on the fifteenth, clouds of smoke were drifting across the road, so while our fears for Ted Rouse's Ripley Chopping and Feed Mill went down fears for our own house rose. It was only when we got to Mrs. Grace Carruthers' Store corner we could see it was the hotel. People were lined along the sidewalks. .The Lucknow Fire Truck was across from Mrs. Pollock's house. Around the south side across from the Royal Bank was the Kincardine Fire truck. then the new Ripley -Huron tank 'truck with its auxiliary engines and the Ripley Fire truck was at the big underground reservoirin Gore Park. Oh yes, we turned the main corner and went east - parking our car in front of our Malcolm Street house, then on foot made our way across ,the Ripley Telephone pole yard, past Jack Treleaven's grain elevator, across the railway tracks and the north end of Gore. Park. The smoke was rolling down the 'street 'north, driven in billows by the south breeze, so thick that there was no way of crossing the road. Mrs. Pollock was safely sitting in Mrs. Effie Sutherland's car across the road from her home and on the road shoulder of Gore Park. As soon as there was a clear spot in the smoke, we came across the road into our house and then into the north half of it to see that Donnie and Carol Fludder, Tammy and Jason were out. Then witkall doors closed, we went back across to • Gore Park where groups of people were standing watching and groups of young people were sitting on the grass in the niee afternoon's sunshine. At once it was apparent that the Royal Hotel was doomed' - no chance of getting the fire out. All the chiefs and firemen had realized this long before our arrival and had "wetted down" the outside of Mrs.. Pollock's house, our house and Howard Hodge's garage which was adjoining to the west end of the hotel. Thanks to the Scott Brothers, - Frank and the late Joe- that when they had the garage built they had it made of concrete block construc- tion right around and hence there Was a fire wall between the hotel and garage. Everyone was glad when it became apparent Howard Hodge's garage would be safe. The only damage that resulted was to the wall between am:ft° the roof. At different times Lucknow firemen, who were guarding the north side, put out burning inSulat- - ed wires andsmall flames around • the, chimney of Mrs. Ernie Pol- lock's house. A few of the Lucknow men we noticed were Stuart Collyer, Jack Treleaven, Sandy Havens and Bud Hamilton. About six 'o'clock Redvers. Johnson was . standing at the road by his place, just south; of the Ripley rink, when Oliver Glenn, the man to whom Redvers was talking, noticed the roof on Mr. Johnson's barn starting to burn.'There was a rush of people and , a ' small hose was connected up and Harvey Brooks of concession 8 west was one of those on the roof to spray thc burning area of wooden shingles with, water. , . The Lucknow Fire Department had their hose connected to the fire hydrant at the corner of Ma. Icolm Street, by Mrs. Elton Orr's house and across from Redver's place. As mentioned before the Ripley Fire Truck was pumping from the concrete underground resei rvoir n Gore Park. Tending the Ripley Fire engine was 'former Ripley Deput Fire Chief Francis Gemmel!. just home from Toronto for the Thanks giving week end. On the job watching the hose was former chief Gordon Scott. I think at one point both Kincardine Fire Chief Bill Griffith and Ripley Fire Chief Doug Liddle were on Howard's garage roof along with some of their men to survey how to•prevent its break through to the garage. Betweeri seven -thirty and eight " ladies •of the village passed out , coffee and sandwiches to - the • firemen. Ripley •men ' including Chief Doug Liddle guarded the fire all night through the rip.- On Saturday much of the de8ri was taken away. 4 ALTON- Don and Sherry Alton of R.
