This Week • In Ripley

A considerable number of people
from Ripley and surrounding area
attended the Lucknow Fall Fair
taking advantage of the dry sunny
weather for an outing last Saturday
afternoon. The fair received good
support from 'the farn'ters as not
one farmer was noticed on the 12th
and lath of Ashfield as the 'bee
truck' went from yard to yard on
the fall honey lift.
This coming week end is the
,Ripley -Huron Fall Fair and it is.

hoped that the weather will also be
dry and sunny. However it is the
autumn equinox time and showers,
with winds or gales, can come at
any time.
Speaking ofweather, the elect-
rical storm on Saturday - evening
resulted in a blackout of the street
lights in Ripley and how black dark
it was outside. Then the wind,
perhaps with assistance, took down
the large white `thermometer' of
the Ripley -Huron Recreation com-
plex. It was located at the main
intersection corner of Gore Park.

Visiting here on Saturday even-
ing were Mr. and Mrs. Duncan
McLeod of Milan in the' Eastern
Townships of Quebec - near
Stormoway. Mr. McLeod corres-
ponded furnishing information
prior to the 1952 Ripley -Huron
Lewis Centennial.

Missing from this year's Ripley -
Huron 'Show Day' will be Mrs.
Gordon Stanley - a director for
more than fifty years.: Aunt Sadie,
as she was known by all her
friends, will be missed as she was a
great organizer and also had much
essential information on 'running
the fair here. She is a patient in St.
Joseph's Hospital with a broken
hip suffered: in a fall on the
rnainstreet of Kincardine. Also in
St. Joe's'is Miss° Christena Robert-
son. A week ago Miss " Theresa
Weber was transferred to Kincard-
ine Hospital from Kitchener.
Pictured in the August edition of
the Canadian Travel Press is Lynn
Ferguson, son of Mr: and Mrs.
John E. Ferguson, concession 4
west in Huron Township. Lynn was
appointed business travel manager
of B.T.A.and will be continuing the
plans of the former manager to
increase Britain's share of the
business travel market in Canada.
Lynn, a forni'er student at the
Ripley District High School and a
member of the community's teams.

Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Lohnes at their Ripley home were a
number of relatives and friends.
They were Mr. and ' Mrs. Lloyd
Karn of Woodstock, Rev. and Mrs.
Kenneth Wilson of Los Angeles,
California. and Earl's brother and
his ' wife, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence.'
Lohnes of Frankfort. Earl, now
retired from the teaching profes-
sion .came to Ripley in 1956 when
he joined the staff of the Ripley
District High School teaching Eng-
lish.

Ripley and Huron folks were
sorry to learn about the passing of
Mrs. Ronald Howey of Elmira - the
former Catherine MacLennan:
Catherine passed away on Thurs-
day, 'August 29, in the Kitchener
Waterloo Hospital. The funeral
service was held in the Dreisinger
Funeral Parlor Chapel on Sunday,
September first with interment. in
Elmira Cemetery.
Catherine spent her early life in
the Ripley -Huron area - the daugh-
ter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex
(Sandy) MacLennan on the farm
presently owned by Mr. and Mrs.
John Gamble on the sixth conces-
sion east in Huron Township. She
was.a graduate of Ripley Continu-
ation School and then of Kincardine
High School. - a class mate of this
reporter in 1928-29, Catherine
then took the .three year . nursing
course at Victoria Hospital in
London. She obtained her R.N.
degree at Vic in 1933.
She is survived by her husband
Ronald Howey of Elmira, two
daughters Isabel; Mrs. Robert
Huggan of Belleville and Ruth,
Mrs. Robert Overy of Toronto; also
her sister Norma, Mrs. Neil
McLennan of . Ripley and her
brother Grant MacLennan of List-
owel. " To these our sympathy is
extended. Catherine• was prede-
ceased by two sisters Anna Mary,
Mrs. • Frank Scott and Christine,
"'Mrs. Wm. J. Dick, also two
brothers John and Dr. Murray

Well with this being fall fair
week in Ripley. it means that many
People in the area are working day
and night. The first work bee was
on Tuesday evening - the first time
the auditorium at thehigh school
was available. All display stands
and tables have to be put together
and in place each year and then on
Saturday after the exhibits are
removed these have to be dismant-
led and stored. Luckily the society
owns the former Knox Church shed
and this can be used for storage.
