ows eggs to spoil, in' a hungry. world.
The problem is not the principle
of National Marketing but rather
the structure under which C. E. M.
A. has to operate.
"The power to regulate produc-
tion ,and -prices is granted to the
provinces under the British,North
America Act and it is impossible
for a national marketing agency
to perform its necessary function
as long as provincial governments
hang on to this. power and refuse
to pass the necessary legislation
to transfer it to the federal auth-
orities ," he said:
"C. E. M. A. must become the
sole authority to regulate the in-
dustry in all df Canadaand not be
hampered by the decisions of prov-
incial marketing boards.."
Mr. Sanford added that failure
to provide national agencies with
necessary powers there will con-
tinue to be problems. for both
consumers and producers. In the
meantime the whole concept for
national marketing will be des-
troyed and, egg production, along
with other commodities will re-
main 'in boom and bust cycles.
"However" , Mr. Sanford
'warned , "each time the cycle
goes around there will be fewer
farmers left and production will
be concentrated into fewer and
fewer hands, who will move in
with complete control of the ind-
ustry."
nd-
ustry."
"The day the control of food'
falls into the hands of a few large
integrated producers will be. a
sorry day for consumers".
