N.F.U. NEWS
A few weeks ago, Eugene
Whelan stated that if the financial
returns. to the dairy farmer are not
improved, milk may be rationed vin
five years.
According to Wm. Stewart, at
the rate the farmers are leaving the
industry, we won't have a dairy
industry in eight years.
Last year Ontario and Quebec
alone lost 5400 dairy farmers
because they were not being paid a
fair price.
We 'lost the sugar beet industry
in southern Ontario and sugar
jumped from $8 to over NO a
hundred. This could easily happen
with dairy products if we start all
importing.
With the higher cost of fertilizer,
twine, gas, oil, interest rates and
machinery, the milk producer is
receiving over $5.00 per hundred
less than it costs to produce it.. ,And
don't tell the dairy farmer to
become more efficient L his
increased efficiency is what has
kept the dairy food prices down for
years at financial loss to himself,
with the result that he can no
longer go on under present con-
ditions
These are' facts brought out at a
recent N.F.U. District meeting at
