This week Rocky would like to
give you 'a brief description and
history of the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority.
It all began with an Order -in- .
Council on September 6 , 1951
which established the Middle
Maitland Conservation Authority,
including only a part of the
Maitland River Watershed In
order to offer a more complete
and effective conservation
program, a second Order -in -Co n-
cil in January,, 1962, established
the. present Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority.
MVCA is presently responsible
for promoting proper manage- •
ment within 984 square miles, in-
cluding 29 different member
municipalities and 14 Conserva-
tion Areas.
Major conservationaims at
MVCA are water quality and
pollution control, proper land use
and management, wildlife pres-
ervation, flood control, provision
'of recreational areas,,reforesta-
tion and public relations and ed-
ucational programs.
Maitland Valley is one of 39
Conservation Authorities in the
province of Ontario.
Maitland Valley's Rocky
Raccoon would like to explain
what a Conservation Authority is.
According to the Conservation
Authorities Act the councils of
two or more municipalities may
request' that the Minister of Natur-
al Resources call a meeting of all
watershed municipalities to organ-
ize a Conservation Authority. If•
two-thirds of the representatives
favour the establishment of an
Authority, a body of representa-
tives chosen according to popula-
tion, is granted the right to con-
duct
on-duct programs for resources prot-
ection'and proper management.
Administrative and capital
costs are shared between the mem-
ber municipalities and the Prov-
incial Government, with some
projects receiving. 100% support by
the Government of Ontario.
From the representatives, on
Executive Committee and several
Advisory Committees are chosen:
They are responsible for the plan-
ning and implementation Of pro-
grams such as proper land use,
forest management, flood preven-
tion and erosion control, wildlife
preservation, development of re-
creational areas, and conserva-
tion education programs.
The Maitland Valley
