This'Wee,k In Ripley
BY AB WYLDS
Right at the start of the noon
hour, last Wednesday , the fourth
concession east in Huron Township
or the old Flowerdale brick school,
came within an ace of being des-
troyed by fire. The school is
owned,. ;by Ripley beekeeper Morri-
son MacKenzie of Inverhuron and
used for the storage of honey
supers or "boxes for putting on the
hives during the summer.
Cam MacKenzie and Ron Sed-
don
eddon were eating their noon .lunch
in the shade of the Lombardy pop-
lars at the east side of the school
grounds when Ron heard a crack—
ing sound. Going to the school
door he was met with flames
from •a pile of shavings and the
inside wall starting to blaze. They
used, their jugs of drinking water ,
then Ronran to the home of John
McMurchy across from the school
for more water. Later John him-
self brought over a pail and they
were able to extinguish it. Per-
haps .a spark from an emery stone
used earlier in sharpening the saw
blade settled unnoticed into the
shavings. Morrison MacKenzie
and this reporter arrived a few
minutes later and all shavings and
smoldering materials were remov-
ed from the building. It is quite
fortunate that the building is still
standing.

Bill Mackay of the tenth con-
cession.reported a ground hog sit-
ting in the top of a maple tree
late Sunday afternoon. This tree
was on the side of the lane lead-
ing into his father's house, Mor-
ford Mackay. As the tree was a
fair height, it was rather an odd-
ity to see this rodent, which.trav-
els on the ground, so high up.

Toronto teacher Tom. Culbert
of Ripley , had a nest of yellow
jacket hornets .exterminated at his
home which he recently purchased
It was fortunate that his uncle,
Sandy MacCharles., making re-
pairs to the exterior of the house,
was not attacked: Perhaps those
hot days last week kept the wasps.,
which at first were thought to be
bees, busy at the time.
