CUCUMBER BEETLES
There has been quite a hit of
damage on emerging cucumbers
in this area. The slender, yellow -
striped cucumber beetle- has been
responsible. The obvio1.3 damage
has been destruction of the seed-
ling Imes but the most serious
damage is bacterial wilt disease.
Most commercial growers have
seen cucumber plants wilt and die
for no apparent reason. This is
usually bacterial wilt and the bac-
teria which cause it are carried
around in the mairre of the cu-
cumber beetle. Due to rather
primitive table manners, the
beetle's manure and the bacteria
in it are injected into the cucu-
mber's sap stream as the beetle
feeds. The plant soon wilts and
dies. If .cucumber beetles are be-
coming troublesome, contact this
office for control recommenda-
tions. The full address is — Ont-
ario Ministry of Agriculture and
Food, Box 1330, Walkerton, Ont-
ario NOG 2V0.
