Bruce wants action on roads promise TOBERMORY — Bruce county council, fed up with a provincial government ' that refuses to hold to a bargain, resolved Wednesday to , lay it on the line with Queen's Park. The county highways com- mittee was directed by coun- cil to get an early meeting with Ontario ' Minister of Transportation and Com- munications, John Rhodes and Energy Minister, Darcy McKeoughto demand action on provincial promises to compensate for county roads ruined by heavy traffic to On- tario Hydro's construction site at Douglas Point. The committee was also ad- vised to see, no one except the ministers, to not go ahead with the meeting if, . as . in some past examples, the dele- gation is foisted off on "flun- kies." Bruce township Reeve John MacKenzie, in whose munici- pality the construction site is located, said the county should tell the government to either use the county fairly or pull Out the construction. "We in Bruce have been played for suckers by the On- tario government, not by Hydro. The road problem was to go to cabinet April 5, but they haven't been able to get it there yet," Mr. MacKenzie said. Ten months ago Hydro promised a $3 million access road to the site if the Ontario ministry of transportation and communications would pay half. County council fears the stalling will endup with no road. County taxpayers would then have to pay for the . wear of the heavy traffic. Highways . chairman Bruce Parket of Cargill said the province has shoved his com- mittee around for the last time. Council was told that the reason for provincial foot - dragging is hard to assess. In other areas of major Hydro construction, as at Nanticoke, Hydro has paid 100 per cent of . access road costs. "But get 40 or 50 miles away from Toronto and the government couldn't care less," Mr. MacKenzie said. Warden J. P. Johnstone said this county is being short- changed in all respects of de- velopment roads. Neighboring Grey county was told in late March of a $1 million 'development road to be built near Meaford. The county road designated was reverted to the township to qualify. Bruce has had no de- velopment road since 1968. "Let the committee tell them (the ministry) we know of the manipulations to get de-, velopment, roads, Maybewe have to go broke to get one," the warden added. Grey county roads depart- ment had a $500,000 deficit two years ago. Harvey Keyes Is 1975 President The annual Webster picnic was held on.
