their frustration over the
price of farm products. There
were about equal numbers of
dairy, beef and pork producers
with many growing grain as well.
Jim Sheldon, National Director
for Region .3. attended and Lorne
Luther , Director of District 5
chaired the meeting.
The dairy policy had a
thorough"going over. Andrew
Kittner, dairy chairman of Local
341 had figures to show that it
cost $11.05 to produce 100 lbs of
milk; 1.010 added to this for profit
on 'investment would bring the /
figure to $12.15. The recent in-
crease announced by the Ontario
Milk Marketing Board will give
the producer an extra .810. Add-
ed to what he is now getting this
gives him about $8.53 per Cwt.
ProduCers agreed that the Can-
adian Dairy Commission is not
interested in paying what it costs,
only enough to ,keep people milk-
ing cows. The Ontario Milk
Marketing Board was described as
a cumbersome board, consisting
of 157 members who set their own
salary; George McLaughin has
been chairman for 8 1/2 years.
The record shows that 120 dairy
farmers per month are leaving the
industry in Ontario.
From this meeting a resolution,
was passed to withhold farm prod-
ucts in 21 days if prices did not
improve. This was a typical
farmers union meeting with the
pressure coming from the grass-
roots that something had to be
done ! Attending from Local 335
were Lorne Luther, Lorne McDon-
ald, Grace . Austin, Bev MeNay
and Charlie, Wilkins. ,
A meeting of all locals in Reg-
ion 3' (Ontario) rill be held in the
Avion-Moter in Malton on Mon-
day, April 8.
