Fly To England
Due To Illness
Bert Symes is the Only one of his
family to have settled in Canada
and his mother had been asking
for him during her illness:-
Carruthers Nursing Horne on .the
6th concession of Kinloss Town-
ship Will cease operation as a nurs-
ing horne and will commence op-
eration as a boarding home• for
men..
The home., operated by Elliott
and Grace Carruthers of Ripley ,
has a capacity for 15 patients and
has been full for the past three
years. The property was purchas-
ed from John Chadwick twenty
years ago and has been operated
as a nursing home since
then:
The reason for closing the' nurs-
ing home operation is because of a
withdrawal of patients by the Ont.'
ario Ministry of Health. The pat-
ients, who have been 'supported
financially through the extended
care and homes for special care
system; are being removed from .
smaller, older homes, making it
impossible for them to, continue.
On Tuesday morning, the num-
ber of residents has been decreas-
ed to five and will further dimin-
ish to two when the new nursing
home opens in Lucknow.
So, it is not by choice. that El-
lioti and Grace cease their nurs-
ing home business which they have
operated successfully for many
years. The decision, made by a
health ministry inspector,, was
learned by' Carruthers just a few
weeks ago. ..A ready buyer was '
willing to purchase the nursing
home as a going business, but
permission to continue operation
was not granted by the Health
Ministry, thus cutting in half the
market value of a business
built up over the past twenty
years.
Trying to. make the best of a
bad situation, Mr. and Mrs.' Car-
ruthers are going to make use of
the facilities available and will
operate the building as a boarding
home for men. It, is hoped that a
demand for this service will be
found by the ever increasing num-
ber of men who are working at the
Douglas Point and Bruce Generat-
ing project now and in the future.

father Bert Syrnes of Campbellford
