PAGE EIGHTEEN At one time there were 230 skaters on the ice - considerably, more than the times when we skated on the flooded rugby field at Varsity stadium on Bloor Street in Toronto so many years ago.. A 'ten minute halt was called each hour to allow Don Peterbaugh and his helpers to . mink, clean and re-flood the ice surface. So many people contributed in so many different ways, that the writer will have to plead for your kind forgiveness if your name has been omitted - it is entirely unin- tentional, Besides, being part of a large crowd is no longer one of our strong points. So first our thanks goes to Elmer Courtney, Bob Emerson, Carmon Courtney, Miss Gail Messenger , Mrs. Joyce (Elmer) Courtney, and Mrs. Marg (Ted) Rouse for their kind help in making sure that -we got answers to our questions. First thing, inside the arena doors, was the registration booth '- two tables, two adding machthes, chairs and staffed: by such people as Eli-tier. Courtney, his'‘ son Carna-. on, Gail Messenger , Doug Coul- tes of the high school staff - to • mention some. Then there was Don Mason down from Kincardine, at the ,Public Address system.. Out on one corner of the ice was Cliff Emmerton playing organ accompaniment - very nice skating music indeed. Then there was always nurses and assistants on hand to look after any possible/ cuts or other injuries - serving two hours at a stretch. Among, these were Mrs. 'Marlene Colling,' Mrs. Howard Orr, Mrs. Gord Mc- Intyre, Mrs. Bob Scott, Mrs. Diane (Wilfred) Gamble, Mrs. Alan McLean, Miss/Kathy Irwin, Mrs. Helen Moore', Mrs. Betty Paquette, Mrs. Chris (Jack) MacDonald and Mrs. Evelyn Henderson. The skaters were served noon and supper meals in the Huron Township hall in Ripley. They were transported back and forth by three medium size yellow and black school buses owned and driven by Gordon Cameron of Pine River and Mr. and Mrs. George Messengerof Reid's Corners. Some of the ladies on the job in the hail were Marlene Coiling, Nancy Regier (from the Brotchie place on the 2nd), Marjorie El- liott, Judy Colling, Gloria Rut- ledge , Mrs. Allan Irwin, Mrs. Betty Scott and Mrs. Joyce Court- ney. At the lunch booth in the rink some of the .ladies were• Mrs. Marg Rouse, Mrs. Man (Kenny) MacDonald, Sandra Fidler, Mab- el Barnard, Marianne Coiling; Lois Pollock, Joan MacKay, Mrs. Shirley (Bob) Harris, Jane Messen- ger and Elaine Pollock. Oh yei,.we•Missed mentioning that :Elaine's, daughter ; miss Sherry Pollock, Ontario Dairy PrinCess a year ago, and now training as a nurse in Toronto was one of the adult skaters.., Sheiry was spon- sored by some former Ripleyites, now in Toronto.. • Dorothy and Jim .Needham supplied the cold drinks for the skaters and two of the many Ripley merchant donors were Mrs. Grace Carruthers and Charles Hooisma , Ripley's friend- ly butcher. We know that we kna ve missed many names - such as. John D. MacKay placing the yellow Ripley traffic barriers in front of the rink to keep an open Space there and using his pick up truck for many errands. To go back to the start of the article you could not believe, the co:operation of everyone unless, you were here - a true "Believe It or Not" for Ripley. Not such a crowd around the north end since Frank Scott.staged that Old Time Fiddler: Contest in the 1952 Re- union and Nels Hodgins had to get the help of former police officer Bruce Wobds to get supplies You are INVITED to grochemica meeting uomuummusommumisinsmismumnosiossummusiumminomumulls; 'LEGION HALL' 7-- LUCKNOW the convOiierit corn herbi: Ekko -- New annual grass herbicide for con New developments in corn weed control Dr. John Bandeen, University of Guelph Patoran -- Herbicide for white beans Plan to attend and enjoy a prof!table get-together with growers.
