REV, J e, We STEWART
Rev. Joseph Wilrriot Stewart ,
pastor of'Burnhamthorpe United
Church, Mississauga for the past
12 years, died.Monday, February
25 at the age of 87. He was min-
ister at Lucknow United Church
from 1941 to 1949.
A niinister since 1915 , he wa;.:',a
world traveller , restaurateur ,
photographer, a lifelong Mason
and past Grand Patron of Ontario.
Chapter of the Order of the East-
ern Star (OES).
Active in the OES since 193.7,
he Was one of a group responsible
for building the Peace Gardens
near Emerson, Man. , where a
minister may preach from a pup-
pit with one foot on the U.S. side
of the border and his other foot in
Canada.
The last of Rev. Stewart's three
world tripS, which included visits
to Russia , India , Hong Kong and
Formosa , was made when he was
84.
He look photography in 'his
youth and financed his university
courses by working in threshing
crews and taking photos.
Rev. Stewart'was born in Glam-
mis, Countyof Bruce. He taught,
school at Stroud as a youth of '
18 years, then returning to Univ-
ersity at Toronto was graduated
in 1914. FdllOwing study at Vic-
toria College in' Theology he was
ordained by the Methodist Church
on June 6, 1915.* After ordina-
tion he served at Drew, Delhi,
Hickson , Luton, Turin, Merritton,
Drayton, Lucknow •
Trafalgar and Lakeview before
going to the. Burnhamthorpe
Church. Victoria College of the
U of T awarded him a doctor. of
divinity degree.
For 33 years „from 1928, he
operated Stewart's Dingin Hall
at the Canadian National Exhibi-
tion during his holidays.' He said
it helped him understand the Views
Of busiriessmen in his parishes. /
He officiated at the weddings
o; his three children and three of
his grandchildren.
Retiring in 1957, Mr. Stewart
served as supervising minister
from January 1, 1958,
until the time of his death.
He married,Myrtle Cochrane
and three of a family survive:
Blanche , Mrs. Ed Kelly, Toronto;
Joy, Mrs. Reid McKim, Ottawa.
and Melvin of Guelph.
Service of Burial, conducted by
the Halton Presbytery, took place.
in'.Port Credit on February 28th
and interment followed at Oak-
ville. Rev. Joblin and Rev. Oliv-
er were ministers at the service.

Shirley Loree, Judy Hunter and
Anne Hamilton then went to
Brown Owl's home to try their test
in first aid. TaWny Owl had the
Golden Bar Brownies to ask them
questions about our founder Lord -,
Baden Powell. Snowy Owl then
told the Golden Bar Brownies

Elizabeth:Wilkins placed the
Toadstool for Brownie Ring.
Brownie Gold was collected and
Snowy OW1 inspected for 'clean
Brownie ties, 'We then had our
Brownie prayer.
At Pow Wow Anne Hamilton
showed her bulb diary for one, of
the tests in Golden Ladder. Kim-
berley Sanderson and Michele
Humphrey each showed a
sctapbook. Tracey 'McDonagh
had a puppet, bookmark and a
scrapbook for the Pack to see.
Mrs. Webster will be testing for
interest badges next week.
The three Golden Ladder Brown-
ies passed their first aid test and
Shirley Loree also completed her
test for compass. Sandra Camp-
bell ran an errand for Tawny Owl.
The• meeting was closed with
Brownie Taps.

The Anglican Church' Women
will meet 9n Thursday afternoon
at the hoine of Mrs. Delbert Hed-
ley with Mrs. Roy. Collins, co-
hostess. This will be a quilting.
Mrs. Gerald Rhody and per
mother Mrs. Claude Dore of Ber-
vie visited on Wednesday with
the latter's sister Miss Merle
Stewart who is a resident at the
Brucelea Haven, Walkerton. It
being Miis Stewart's-80th birthday.,
they all went down town for a
birthday dinner.
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Hodgins
of London visited during the week
with relatives here.
We extend sympathy to Mr. and
Mrs. Weir Eckenswiller and other
relatives in the passing of Grace's
mother,, the late Mrs. ,Charlotte
Morland. The funeral was held on
Wednesday from the MacLennan
funeral home', Kincardine.
