THE BIG GAME
by Ric Irwin
It was Saturday , the day of the
big game. Our team had assemb-
led 'in ,a huddle for our last minute
pep talk. In a couple of minutes
the umpire said , "Play. Ball" . All
the boys went out to the field
except me. I sat on the bench.
Inning after inning I just, sat there.
Then in the eighth inning, Bill
Brown got the ball in the eye. I
had to take his place. That was
an ,aWful mistake: I was the worst
player on the team. I went up to
bat and struck out. Later I went
out to the field and missed three
dies. I was rotten. There was no
One On the team to replace me.
I had, to' do better ,. The team was
counting on me. I started concen-
trating. I felt like I was going to
be 'a hero. It was my turn at bat.
I got up 'to the plate. The bases
were loaded , There were two out
and the score was 12 to 9 for
them. The pitcher threw a fast
ball. I swung. Guess what happen-
ed? I missed! He 'pitched again.
I swung again. Everbody cheered:
I looked up. The ball was flying
over the fence. I had won the
game.
