evening to honour Mrs. Melinda
Nivins (nee Culbert) on her 77th
birthday (February 22) was held

ling us of the passing of a very
dear Lucknow friend of Mothers -
Mary (Minnie) Moore Wiesen on
November 25 , 1973: She was the
daughter of the late Patrick Moore
and had one brother Jack, who
predeceased her a few years ago.
Mrs. Wiesen's husband survives
her and one son Robert and his ;
wife Ann and a grandson.
All these years Mother and
"Minnie" , as she wanted to be
called., have corresponded and we
were very, saddened to lose such a
dear • friend.
I would also like to tell you that
MOther, (Mrs. Sam Beaton „the
former Mary Ann McPhee) cele-
brated her 92nd birthday , Janudry
7, 1974. She is living in the
ChinOok Muting Home , 1261 Glen-
more Trail, Calgary, Alberta
and celebrated at the HOrne (due
to a cold and ,alSo very cold weath
er).
All her good friends went over
and we had a birthday party for
her, Glad to report that she is
now over her illness and looking
forward to making her Sunday
trips home with me for the day
and for my home cooked meals!
As her eyesight isn't all that
good I read her the Sentinel and
still many items of interst in it
for her.-
My cousin Alexander MacPhee
of Edmonton (who has made many
visits to Lucknow' to visit the Mac-
Donald Clan) was recently honored
at GoVernined House,. Ottawa by
being admitted into the Order of
the Hospital of St. John of Jerusa-
lem , commonly khoWn as the St.
Johns Ambulance Brigade. The
former Gov. Gen. Roland Mitch-
ener preSided over the investiture..
Alex is a cousin of Sandy Nichol-
son too. He was down to visit
Mother and Myself before he , went

meeting, which is to be held at ,

now 60 years old and is planning
to celebrate in special ways during

Mrs. Sam. Beaton Had 92nd Birthday
The Ontario Task Force on Off-Track Betting
stated, in its report to the Government of
Ontario in 1972, that the objectives of an
off-track betting system should be to:
• suppress' or, at least, reduce illegal
bookmaking
• provide a service to the public
• assist the horse racing industry
• provide government revenue
• substantially reduce illegal bookmaking
on horse racing
• give the public a service that it wants
• give Ontario the best thoroughbred and
standardbred horse racing in the world
• benefit the residents of Ontario by
providing the provincial government with
millions of dollars in additional tax revenue
The announced policy of the Government of
Ontario is to introduce such an off-track
