s my fond hope that our
)rs will read this item I am
t to write. At the U. of
gia,.research has indicated
saturated fatty acid,, which
s blood cholesterol', is. not
present in meat fat. The
Lary fatty acid that is in meat
caproic) actually lowers blood
esterol and blood pressure. On
of this comes the statement
1Dr. Michael DeBakey , the
ous heart transplant surgeon,
only about 30% of heart pat-
Fhave any cholesterol abnor-
ity. He said that diet is not a
:ific cause of heart disease,
ing: "We don't know the
se and we need to take a much
attitude' toward diet in ;el-
m to the disease . since it is
thus that diet , as far as 850/0
10% of the patients are concer-
, has not been related or ass-
ated with the disease in our
rerience." Then from Dr. Ray-
nd. Reiser , Texas A&M Univ-
ity that saturated fats do not by
Criterion, elevate cholesterol
high risk levels, "if indeed they
e it at all". Dr. Sherman of th
Meat Board thought it more likely
that we have insuffient crude fiber
than that we eat too much satur--
ated fat, He said that there, is-
considerable evidence .that dietary.
fiber - whole cereal grains, rough
ge of fruits , vegetables - lowers
blood cholesterol.
Just saw in the daily press that
the agricultural outlook •
conference doesn't, expect food
cost to go down. We, as farmers
have known this all.along. It
can't come down at the farm
level, for then Production would
decrease and the price increase.
It can't go down 'at the transport-
ation level, for fuel prices went
up as well as truck prices , and
wages won't come down. Restaur-
ant prices. can't go down because
wages and other inputs went up.
It appears to me that low incogie
people must have some help to
pay for the higher food cost. But
I'm afraid that high income.
people , professional people and .
sane high paid union members
Will not he willing to sacrifice
anything. Then, if the food cost
goes up, they'll demand more
money , which in turn will result
in higher food cost.
George Penfold
Was W.I. Speaker
Mr. George Penfold , from the
Ministry of. Agriculture and Food
for Huron County, was guest
speaker for the January meeting
of Dungannon Women's Institute.
Mr. Penfold , who resides at Nile
and works out of the Clinton
Agriculture Offices discussed the
problem of Agricultural pollution.
He gave out collies of the agricul-
ture code of practice for Ontario.
The many questions asked showed
real concern and interest in the
topic.
. Mrs. Elmer Black, Agriculture
Committee convener , introduced
Mr. Penfold and Mrs. Harry
Girvin thanked him and presented,
him with a gift. Mr. Penfold
stated that most problems are
Caused by management' or mis-
management. His job provides an
engineering consulting seryice to
farmers.
The meeting was_held at the
home of Mrs. Hugh McWhinney.
Mrs. Harvey Alton was in charge.
The roll call , "A sunny side of
-farm life" , brought a variety of
answers and a few laUghs ,
Mrs, Alvin Kerr , in keeping
with the topic ; gave the motto
"All things in life need cultiv-
ation". We need to cultivate our
lives, spiritually, physically
and mentally. She said we must
cultivate our lives that they may
become fuller and richer.
During the business period a
letter front Mrs. Noblitt was read.
Also several ideas were read for
the celebration of our, 60th
'anniversary. Mrs. Lorne Ivers,
Mrs. W.A. Stewart and Mrs.
Wilbur Brown are to be a comm-
ittee to make plans. It is possible
that several events during the
year will mark the occasion./A
pot-luck luncheon for the
February meeting is to be the fixst
event. 'At that time, Mrs. Donald
Haines of Auburn, District Presi-
dent t will visit.
Following the singing of the
Queen and Grace a lovely lunch
was served by hostesses, Mrs. •
Girvin, Mrs. Stewart and Miss
