TROUBLE FREE FARROWING
A good swine producer gets the
highest pay for good ,farrowing
management and the poor. one
••n •wmssu:iw•ommwmiwmmrmmin takes the greatest punishment for
his lack of abilities.
The battle for trouble-free far ,
rowing starts well before farrow-
ing takes place. Here are some
points "how to".
Early GestatiOn - 1. Record the
-dhraetees. ding and projected farrowing
2. Avoid any stress, such as mix-
ing sows, and reduce energy in-
take•during the first 30 days of
gestation.
Four Weeks before Farrowing -
1. IncreaSe the feed allowance
from 4 to 5 1/2 pounds. Most of
the development of the unborn
litter occurs during the last 1/3
of pregnancy. That's when the:
nutrient needs of the sowl are the
greatest.
2. Treat for internal parasites if
necessary. (Use Piperazine'or
THE
Trarnisol)
3. Quarantine the breeding herd.
4. Build up iminunity of the "bug!'
population present in the farrow-
ing house. (Some soiled bedding
from the farrowing house could. be
brought ,into the .pregnant sow's
Four Days Before Farrowing-
1. Wash the sow with warm 'water,
soap and a mild disinfectant. This
will remove worm eggs and possib-
ly reduce disease organisms.
2. Treat for external parasites if
necessary."
S. Clean and disinfect the farrow-
ing pen or crate. Check waterers,.
heat sources.
4. Keep handy: towels, side cut-
ting pliers, oxytocin, iodine, pen
strep, tranquilizer,
thermometer, syringe and needles
5. Move the sow into clean farrow-
ing pen about four to five days
before the. expected farrowing
date:
6. Dilute the sow ration with 25%
bran a week before the due date.
Watch for constipation.
7. Don't feed shortly before far-
rowing. Provide fresh cleari wat-
er.
Farrowing Day
1. Be present at farrowing.
2. Dry off freshly born piglets,
