The battle for trouble-free far , rowing starts well before farrow- ing takes place. Here are some points "how to". Early GestatiOn - 1. Record the -dhraetees. ding and projected farrowing 2. Avoid any stress, such as mix- ing sows, and reduce energy in- take•during the first 30 days of gestation. Four Weeks before Farrowing - 1. IncreaSe the feed allowance from 4 to 5 1/2 pounds. Most of the development of the unborn litter occurs during the last 1/3 of pregnancy. That's when the: nutrient needs of the sowl are the greatest. 2. Treat for internal parasites if necessary. (Use Piperazine'or THE Trarnisol) 3. Quarantine the breeding herd. 4. Build up iminunity of the "bug!' population present in the farrow- ing house. (Some soiled bedding from the farrowing house could. be brought ,into the .pregnant sow's Four Days Before Farrowing- 1. Wash the sow with warm 'water, soap and a mild disinfectant. This will remove worm eggs and possib- ly reduce disease organisms. 2. Treat for external parasites if necessary." S. Clean and disinfect the farrow- ing pen or crate. Check waterers,. heat sources. 4. Keep handy: towels, side cut- ting pliers, oxytocin, iodine, pen strep, tranquilizer, thermometer, syringe and needles 5. Move the sow into clean farrow- ing pen about four to five days before the. expected farrowing date: 6. Dilute the sow ration with 25% bran a week before the due date. Watch for constipation. 7. Don't feed shortly before far- rowing. Provide fresh cleari wat- er. Farrowing Day 1. Be present at farrowing. 2.
