Just recently, the Economics
Branch, Ontario Ministry of Ag-
griculture and Food, published
information on the costs of corn
storage facilities in Ontario (prin-
cipally Southwestern Ontario)
and the Corn Belt area of the
United States. A review of this
publication indicates the follow-
ing for corn storage in Ontario in
1972..
1. The trend toward field shell-
ing of corn in Ontario has reduc-
ed the number of units being
erected for ear corn, storage.
Costs for a standard ear 'corn
crib, 4000 bushel capacity, with
a concrete base, •but no roof, av-
eraged 55 cents per bushel, erec-
tion costs included. Although the
round steel wire circle has limit -
c1 application here in Ontario due
to lack of good cross -ventilation,
still there are some of these units
being erected. This type of stor-
age averaged .56 cents per bushel
for the structure only, for 1500
bushel size, with 14 cents more
required to cover the concrete
base and erection costs.
2. Most dried shelled corn is
stored in round steel bins on
farms in Ontario. The average
respective .costs per bushel for
5500 and 10,000 bushel sizes are
given at 25. and 23 cents for the
bin only, 7 and 5 cents for the
concrete foundation, and 6 cents
for erection. For the 10,000 bushel

3. Concrete .tower silos are also
used for the storage of corn, both
dried and high •moisture, with
most on-farm storage using silos
being for the latter. The cost of
dry, shelled corn in structures
of approximately 5100,
6400 and 8700 bushels was 46, 37
and 35. cents respectively (silo
• erected including . footings, doors,
roof and filler pipe). The cost per
bushel of 'storage capacity in-
creased 3 to 4 cents for high
moisture corn at 25%moisture.
This report also pointed out
that in Canada, 'new grain .stor-
age and drying equipment ac-
• quired betvVeen April 1, 1972 and
August 1, 1974.for income pur-
poses, may be depreciated at an
accelerated rate so that the cap-
tal costs of 'these new facilities
may be completely written off in'
4 years.. (For non-farm • drying
equipment $15,000 is the maxi-
mum amount eligible for this new
depreciation.) • ,
And, of. course, Ontario farmers
may receive 40% of the cost of
grain storage and grain handling
equipment, up to a maximum of
$3,000 per farmer, under the Cap-
ital Grant Program.
