MOISTURE CONTENT OF HIGH
MOISTURE CORN
In some regards we live in a
country of extremes; this is part-
icularly true with respect to the
weather, and its effects on crops.,
Last fall, some farmers had prob-.
lems with corn that was too high
in moisture content; this year it
appears as if the opposite. may
be true.
'Corn that is being left to be
harvested as grain . is presently
drying down quite rapidly; this
is fine if the corn is to be stored
in the dry State, but it may pose.
some problems- for those farmers
who are going to store it as high
moisture corn.
In order that proper ensiling
action take place, corn should not
be' put into a silo below a certain
• minimum moisture content, Shel-
led corn going into an open-top
silo needs to be ground and have
a moisture level 25% or above
to ensure good packing to exclude
the air. Even whole shelled corn
going into a controlled atmos-
phere (sealed) silo should not,
have a moisture content below
22%. High moisture ground ear
corn should have an average
moisture content of 28% •or bet-
ter -- which means the ears
should be harvested when the
kernels are 25% or above.
To ensure that the corn crop is
harvested at the right moisture
level, 'it it important to check
moisture content with a proper
moisture meter. Unfortunately,
not all types of meters give ac-
curate readings in the' range rec-
ommended for high moisture
corn. The most suitable for high
moisture corn is the oven type,
used in conjunction with an ac- •
curate set of scales.
Adding water to corn to in-
crease the moisture content is
extremely difficult to accomplish
without the use of equipment
//specificallY designed for the
purpose, since 'it' takei" a good
deal of water to make much of
a change. For example, to raise
a ton of corn froM 20 to 25%
moisture 'would require abmit '135
lbs. (131/2 gals.) of water, and
This must be soaked, up by the
corn prior to going into storage.
. The secret then, is to watch the
moisture content of the corn, and
harvest while it is still in the
right moisture range.
Farmers in Bruce wishing to'
have corn checked for moisture
content are invited to . bring
samples to the Ontario Ministry
of. Agriculture and Food -office in
Walkerton. '
