Bruce Farm Report
BUGS '73
There have, been a few insects
around this summer which have
given.more trouble than usual in
the home garden.
Flea beatles, a small black
jumping insect, have eaten buck-
shot holes .in potato leaVes and'
have eaten the flowers off aly-.
ssum, Tarnished Plant Bugs, a
dark, brown mottled insect about
the size of a leaf hopper, have
put holes into string beans, des-
troyed ,flower buds on zinnias
aSters, etc., and destroyed the
growing points on cucumber
vines. There is a fair amount of
corn borer breaking down the
corn stalks -- 'look for "sawdust"
on the stalks. Mites' --- almost' too
small to see, have bothered marl-
golds;' patience plants,. morning
glory and house plants. They are
usually found . on the underside
of ' the leaves sucking' out the
plant juices: A fine web is often .
the first indication of their pre-
sence. Insecticides like Sevin,
control most of -these insects.
Mites can be set back by a
• strong spray of water from the
garden hose or by a 'special mit-
icide like Kelthane.
