Pine River Central
Effective today, Wednesday,
September 12, Pine River Central
School; located on the 4th of Hur-
on Township, just east of Highway
21, has been closed and the stud-
ents will receive their education
at Ripley-Huron Central School
in Ripley.
The announcement was made
on Monday in a letter sent home
to parents and signed by the Dir-
ector of Education for Bruce ,Coun-
ty,,J. L. Bowers.
• 'The letter stated that because
of declining enrolment , which
stood at 11 at the time the letter
was written, it hadbecome diffi ,
cult to provide a program to meet
the needs of the pupils, both •
educationally and socially. Be-
cause of the cost, it was not pract ,
ical to continue operation for such
a limited number and the decision
was reached to close the school.
Grades• 1 to 6 from the immed-
iate Reids Corners area in Huron
Township have been attending
the school. 'Projected enrolment
for September had been 35. Op-
ening day enrolment On September
4 was 24, enrolment September 5
was 23 and on September 7 it had
reduced ,to 12.
There have been no enforced
boundary lines for the school and
with kindergarten pupils starting
school at Ripley-Huron, a grad-
ual trickle of students, who would
have normally attended 'Pine Riv-
er Central in grade i to 6, start-
ed attending Ftipley-liuron.
It is'apparent by enrolment
figures that a Sizeable group, who.
were expected to attend,Pine
River on opening day, chose to
attend Ripley. --
When this happened , plans were,
completed to move one teacher
to Ripley-Huron leaving an enreil ,

Andy Ritchie Sells
Farm, Buys
Lucknow Home
Andrew 'Ritchie has sold his 100'
acre Ashfield Township farm on
the 10th concession to Mr. and
Mrs. Ian Thomas of the Galt area.
The farm is known to many as
the former Tom Ferguson place.
The new owner receives possession
on November 1st. The farm has
been owned by Andy for over
thirty' years.
Mr. and. Mrs. Ritchie have
purchased the Sam. Alton home at
the southern outskirts of Lucknow
at one time owned by Sam's dad,
the. late Jim Alton. Possession
was received last week.
The sales were completed
through Warren Zinn, local agent
for Wilfred Mclntee' Real Estate.
Died In Hospital
William M. Scott of Lucknow
passed away in Wirigham and
District' Hospital 'on Tuesday, Sept.
ember 4,in his 67th year.
The funeral was held at Mac-

The vote in Huron .Council was
not unarlimous, but carried by 'a
majority. 'Some in Huron fav-
oured an 8011- 20% split.
The meeting was held jointly
with Ripley Council.

Accra, Ghana., West Africa.
Dan is the son of Mrs. Elizabeth
Stothers of Lucknow and Ruth, a
native of West WawanOsh, is the
daughter of Mrs. Harvey Webb.
They have, been in Canada 'for, ,
about two months after complet-
ing a two year term in Ghana
where Dan is involved in agricul-
tural work as. a representative
from Canada and' the'University
of Guelph.
' Prior to going, to' Ghana , Dan
was Ag' Rep in the Rainy River
District of Northern Ontario and
lived, at Erno. .The Rose family
have a cottage at Emo, and in
addition to their time spent in
this community, they' also spent'
time in Emo while on their vaca-
tion in Canada.
, Their terra in Ghana was origin'
ally for two years and.they have
decided to spend another year in
the werkthere.

and son Scott visited at the home
of Mery and Alva McIntyre in
Teeswater during the month of
August. .
Dr. Mowbray and his family
have spent the past three years
in Solo, Indonesia, where he has -
been serving with the CARE,
medico program.
br. Mowbray and family are
presently enroute to Kabul. Afgh -,
'anistan to serve a second term
there with CARE, the previous
term being in the early nineteen
sixties. .
'Dr. Mowbray, formerly of •
Lucknow, is a brother of Alba
McIntyre, and a family gathering
was held,at the McIntyre home in
Teeswater during their visit. Mrs.
Mowbray is the former Catherine
Johnston of Lucknow.

59th Anniversary,
Mr. and' Mrs. Wm. Irvin of
Ashfield Township marked their
59th wedding anniversary on Sun-
day, September 2 at a family
dinner at. the Log Cabin Restaur-
ant and a gathering at their.home

Mrs. Irvin, the former Mabel
Alton, became the bride of Wm.
Irvin on September 2, 1914 at
the home of Lsaac Cranston. The
couple has resided ever since on
the Ashfield Township farm where
Mr. Irvin was born.
They have a family of two sons,
Robert of Dungannon and Russel
of Ashfield; three daughters, Mrs'.
Percy (Anna) Blundell of Goder-
ith; Mrs. Jim (Willia) Steel of
London; .Mrs. Eldon (Doreen)
Irwin of R. 2 Sarnia.
There 'were ten grandchildren
preSent for the gathering and three
great grandchildren.
