Native The man who spearheaded a. drive that made Listowel the first Ontario town to have-floodlights in its baseball park is to be honored posthumously in that town. At a meeting recently town council approved a recommenda- tion 'of the Parks, arena , recrea-' tion and community centre board that Listowel Community Centre in Memorial Park be renamed the John Bell Diamond. Mr. Bell died of cancer, at the • age of 58 last January in Stratford . where he had resided since 1963. I John was a native of Pine River area in Huron Township and a • seasonal resident of Point Clark where Mrs. Bell now resides. • • ,While living in Listowel he also organized and managed the former Listowel Legionnaires base-. ball team which won two Ontario , championships and often reached the finals in the senior inter-coun- ty league. • A year ago Mr. Bell helped :eareation director Don Town organize an old -timers. baseball , game in Listowel. There were approximately 280 enrolled in the Red Cross Program for the month of August. .Adult classes held every Monday,, Tues- day and Wednesday nights also maintained excellent attendance throughout the month of August and ended on August 22nd with an exciting game of waterpolo. The men's and women's club also continued through August.
