JULY 1933
Fire threatened 'Lucknow's busi-
ness section when an early morn-
ing blaze was discovered in John-
ston's Barber Shop, but was
brought under control and kept
within the building. A coal burn-
ing water jacket in the basement
of the barber shop was the cause
of the outbreak, which was dis-
covered at 4.15 a.m. by a party.
of London fisherman as they were
passing through town. The: Luck-
now Fire Brigade had a stiff battle
for an hour or so before the fire'
was controlled and prevented from
spreading to other buildings.'
A dumping ground
property was secured by the Luck-
now ,Village Council from the
CNR property at the north 'end of
Havelock Street. This property
contained some three or four
acres.:.
The village experienced its sec
ond fire in three weeks when at
2.30 a.m. a barn and shed, the
property of Russ Johnstone, were
discovered in flames. Housed in
the barn and shed was Mr. John-
stone's new Ford V-8; a hearse on
sleighs. the "Black Maria" and
another set 'of sleighs. Fortunate-
ly Mr. Johnstone's limousine
hearse was in his garage at the
store.
