News. By Mrs. J. Austin The National Farmers Union, in its brief to the Ontario Govern- ment, asked for a complete freeze on the sale of farm land to. specu- • lators and developers The N.B. U. expressed concern -that Ontario may lose one of its most valuable natural resources if industrial and residential developmentproceeds as in the past, without planning. A freeze is needed to prevent speculators who sense possible government action frommoving in on farm land to avoid further regulation. Any land taken from agricultural use for development would be purchased by a Govern- ment agency to prevent specula- tion. The .N.F.U. condemned the proposal that the C.P.R. haul metro Toronto garbage to rural areas for disposal and said legisla - . tion for recycling wastes is "past due". The Government was asked to support the marketing of Ontario grains, including corn and soy- beans, through the Canadian Wheat. Board. Noting that prices for feeds used ,by dairy farmers had doub- led and even tripled in thepast year, the N.F.U. asked Ontario to support its position that farm- ers be paid $7.00 per cwt. for industrial milk and $8.00 for fluid. milk. However, the N..F. U. -feelsmilk processors and re- tailers should not be allowedto take ,advantage of better prices to farmers as they have in the past. • "We .suggest a'public audit of milkprocessor-distributor accounts before any further con- sumer price increases for milk are allowed", the N.F.U. said. Ontario was asked to pass en- abling legislation which would. permit the N.F.U. to bargain on behalf of the province's farm- ers when more than 50 per cent of them become members of the Union. '1'he N. F.11. congratulated the Government for instituting the principlethat quotas be non - saleable in .its egg marketing plan. ' tor of "Lee Manor" a new senior citizens centre in Owen Sound gave a most interesting talk on the centre which will be officiall) opened in August. , Entertainment by Club delegates: completed the. afternoon session.
