of years• before thefirst
building•was erected and still
more -years before the first _
minister was.inducted. The
church, however is more than a
building or a minister. It is 'a' •
bodyof believers who profess
faith in Christ and the Ashfield
congregation was that.
The early settlers came from
the, rlighl'ands of Scotland. They
were poor in earthly treasure but
they were honest, hard working
people, and a people who feared
and worshipped .God., Settlement
started about 1838 and for .a .few
years services were held in homes
and in the clearings , with 'appoint
ed elders looking' after the spirit-
ual care of the congregation..,
In 1857 it was agreed to build
a church. About 1860 it was
ready for use. Iii 1865 the first
minister was called and inducted.
He was the Rev. Alexander,Grant
from Owen Sound.,
It was unique that. the guest
minister for the celebration
should be. Rev. Alexander Grant's
great grandson,. the Reverend Dr.
George L. Douglas., M.S.; S.T.
M. , D.D. Dr. Douglas comes
from Toronto and was formerly •
of Luc know . He gave as his ser- .-
mon' for the morning service
"The Church, The Pillar, and •
Ground of the Truth" and for the
evening ev.ice "A Place to
Stand".
He was assisted at both services
by Rev. Kenneth J. Rooney, min-
ister of Ashfield and Ripley con-
gregations. Rev. Rooney's mes-
sage to the congregation,
reminded them that they must
return to the source of their
heritage which: served our .fore-
fathers
ore-fathers 'so. well. How can we
neglect so .great a salvation? It is
only by our patience and honesty
in'working with the old faith that
we shall be able. to •possess it
anew and make it our own so that
.we can pass, it on fresh and invig-
orating to the generations to
come.
The choir gave generously of
'their talents, who with the help
of the guest soloist/Mrs. Bertha
-Scott of Ripley, sag : the
anthem "Song of Peace","King
All Glorious"., "Christ. Walked.
This Way Before", "Father :Hear
Our Prayer" and "Offering. Prayer"
Mrs. Scott sang a solo, "Hymns
of the Old Church Choir". Solo
parts in the anthems were taken
by Mrs. Bertha MacKenzie and
her .daughter Dianne and Miss.
Flora Simpson. .The men's quar-
tet of former years , Allan Mac -
Lean of Collingwood, Elmer
MacKenzie of Mount Forest,
Duncan Simpson and Finlay Mac-
Donald of Ashfield, sang "I Want '
My Life To Tell" and "Almost,
Persuaded". Music was under '
the direction of the organist
Mrs. ,Lillian Simpson. .
The ladies of the church,
under the direction of the W. M. Sy
president Mrs. Jane West served
a bountiful lunch to all those,

following the services. A wond-
erful afternoon followed renewing
acquaintances -with former
members and guests who had
returned. to help celebrate this
memorable occasion. A birthday
cake centred the tea table which
was a ,replica of the present.
church. This was artisiically
designed and created by Mrs.
Rhoda MacKenzie.
With a spiritual ancestry
drawn from men and women of
heroic blood, with a church hist-
ory associated with many of the
most interesting eras and incid-
ents in the annals of the human
race, we owe lasting gratitude
for the material and spiritual
blessings we enjoy today. We
hope the Ashfield church will
serve? many generations to come
for the proclaiming of His gospel.
