Owen Sound Paper Describes Muical
Life Of Bob Hall, Formerly Of Lucknow
The following story, in part,
was copied from the Owen Sound
Sun -Times and concerns a former
,Lucknow resident, Bob Hall, son
of Mr, and Mrs. Elwin Hall.
• • •,
.Probably the busiest contestant
in the Owen Sound music festival
is 18 -year-old. Robert Hall of
Owen Sound,.
Robert is appearing in 17 festiv -
al events including brass, piano
and vocal competitions. In addi-
tion to his own classes he is
piano accompanist for four other
contestants.
Robertstarted taking piano les-
sons at the age of six. Euphon-
ium , he picked upfrom his fath-
er Elwin Hall.
Robert also studies . trombone at
Owen Sound collegiate and voca-
tional institute, where he is a
student.
Two years agog he started tak-
ing :voice lessons . ' He also stud-
' ies counterpoint by mail...
With all these outlets to choose
from, small wonder Robert is not
sure what line of musical endeav-
or he wants to enter profession-
ally.
"It's a little too early to tell,"
he .explained. "If. I perform on
the 'piano it will be as a profes-
rfortnarxe to keep you ahead.
to bcick you up.

sional accompanist.”
He feels this typeof perform-
ing is rewarding in that it gives
musician artists a chance to work.
as a team..
"In sortie pieces .the aocompan-
ist provides a backdrop for, the
singer. In others the singer and
"accompanist form more of a duet.
The accompanist has to be able to
tell the difference.
• "It's really quite an art. In
some festivals they have a class
just for accompanists. I would
like to see that in Owen' Sound."
While some amateur' music-
ians
usic-ians don't like to appear in public,
Robert thrives on competition. He
believes musicians have to express
themselves to others.
"If you spend rill your time
alone practicing, you're not ex-
pressing anything to anyone,"
he said.
He believes festivals are valu-
able to young, musicians because
they provide an opportunity for
them to see how they compare to
other artists.
"You' can take lessons for years
but you'llnever really know
where you, stand until you get into
a competition.
"Anyone thinking about going
into music professionally needs to
appear in public. The festival is.
one of the few places you can do
that; in Owen Sound . " • .
" He feels festivals give the stud-
ent a chance to work a piece of
music up to a performance level.
Robert is not the only member
of the Hall family in the festival
this year. His young sisters;
Sally and Susan,; have competed
in piano classes. • '
With all of them practicing,
Robert has found it necessary to
seek rehearsal space in Division
Street United Church.
