CORRECT MOISTURE' IN
HAYLAGE
If you put haylage in too dry
you can have a fire in your silo..
There were at least two in Onto
ario last year. If you put hay-
lage in too' wet it stinks.
The danger area for fire is
between 20% and 45% moisture.
Anything over 70% is too wet and
likely to stink. That ' leaves a
range of 45% to 70% in which
you can safely make good hay-
lage. Haylage going into a hor-
izontal silo should be at the high
end . of the range 'and should also:
be covered with plastic.
We have moisture testers in our
office if you wish to get a sample
tested. Haylage , should feel damp
but you should not be able to
squeeze water out of it with your
hands. • ,
Cutting fine and complete pack-
ing is also a necessary part of
making good haylage. ,
By the way, if you' haven't look-
ed
ooked at your alfalfa for weevils yet
it is probably too late to see any-
thing but the damage.

SAVE THOSE ALFALFA
LEAVES
Leaves of legumes contain a
high portion of the feeding value
of the plant. Alfalfa. `leaves, for
example, contain about 70% of,
thetotal protein, and 90% of the
minerals and, vitamins..' Besides -
leaves contain less .fiber than the
stems and ' are afore easily di-
gested.
igested. Leaf shattering from alf-
alfa yielding 3 tons annually can'
result in- nutrient losses equiv-
alent to . the value' of 500 or more
lbs. soybean oil meal plus 250 lbs.
grain per acre. .
When humidity is low some
shattering can •occur even when
hay moisture is as high as 55%.
But the bulk of shattering Occurs
when hay dries below 35 to 40%
moisture.
DRYING RATE. AND WINDROW
WIDTH
In some recent tests forage
from a 9 foot mower was gather-
ed into various windrow . widths
and drying rates compared: Mow-
ingand windrowing was done
about 4 _p.m. and moisture sam-
ples were taken at various times
throughout the following day.
Forage in 20 to 40 inch wind-
rows dried considerably slower.
than 50 to 70 inch, wide wind-
rows. Importance of windrow
width was affected by kind of
drying day . too. During Na good
drying day, time was more im-
portant than width' in determining
drying rate. Drying rates for
grasses were considerably faster.
than legumes. • -
Researchers suggest that wind-
row widths should be adjusted ac-
cording to - your particular for-
age programand weather. "When
fast • drying is needed, forage
windrows - should exceed 40
