'There are several names which.

but in the end it was a'true com-
munity effort with Ithe idea mov-
ing ahead quickly, not always
•,smoothly, but nevertheless with
the support of close to .10010 of
the community.
The pool is now a reality and
the final touches are being made
in finishing up the change house
• and landscaping for the official
• opening on Saturday.
Lucknow will ring up two big
events on Saturday. Besides the

set aside to honour a Lucknow
native son who made it big in his
chosen professi , hockey.
Saturday, besides being Swim-
ming Pool Day, is also Paul Hend-
erson Day when residents of
this area will have a chance to
honour Paul for the fame he has
brought to himself and his home
community in the world of hockey,
particularly International Hockey'
•where he was a key factor in the
Canadian team defeating Russia-.
• Several months ago, the Village
of Lucknow, Reeve and Council, ,
decided that a special day should
be set aside by this community to
honour Paul. Reeve George Joynt
approached the Lions and Legion
• who together, formed a commit-
tee to .make plans for the June
• 23rd.event.
• The town arranged for the pres-
ence of the Kitchener-Waterlo0
Dutchnlen Drum and Bugle 13and.
The Lions -Legion Committee,
which has been under the general
chairmanship of Barry McDonagh,
set up a beef barbecue for late
afternoon and a dance that even-
ing. Proceeds were set for the
swimming pool fund.
Tied in with this will be the
official opening of the pool in
•mid afternoon, plus the
introductions and speeches earlier.
All that is needed now to round
out the day is a break in the
weathersand a large crowd of
civic minded people from the
area,' interested in their commun-
ity, its progress and its accom
plishments. Lucknow and Dist-
rict has never lacked these.
Two Area Women
At Banff Sessions
The Federated "Women's insti-
tutes of Canada met in Banff,
Alberta this week, June 18 - 22nd.
A delegation of Ontario Women's
Institute members left by Air Can-
ada on Saturday and Sunday.
Attending locally are Mrs. Wm.
G. Arnold, Ripley, Past President
of Brute South District and Mrs.
Harvey'Houston, Lucknow, Prov-
incial Public Relations officer,
Others attending from Bruce
County are Mrs. George Woelfe,
Grey-Bnice Area president and
Mrs. Scott Wilson, both of Pais-
ley; also Mrs. Fred.Friar, Chesley
past President of Bruce East Dist-
rict.
The opening session was, on
Monday afternoon, June 18th.
The convention delegates were
guests of the Alberta Government
at a banquet Monday evening.
Wednesday there is a Mountain
bus tour, with sessions in the ev -
ening. Sessions conclude on Fri-
day.

Lucknow Vilbge Council let
the contract for the construction
of a new 40 Toot bridge on Wil-
loughby,,west of the High School.
The contract was awarded to Ow-
en King, contractor of Wingham,
the lowest of three tenders. The
tender price was $10,924:50..
Mr. and Mrs. Sid Plowright re-
turned from Oshawa to Lucknow
to retire and had a new home
under construction. •
Lucknow Council purchased a
new fire truck. The tender of La
France Engine. Company for fire
pumper and equipment was ac-
cepted at the figure of $7,100.
An allowance of over
$3000 was made for the present
equipment. Council had prev-
iously approved purchase of the
truck from Montgomery Motors
at a cost of $4,531. •
• The Ted brick schoolhouse at
Lochalsh built in 1918 at a cost
of $5000 was being demolished
because it was a highway hazard.
It had been vacantsince the new
North Ashfield Central School had
been opened. .
Lucknow Lodge No. 112, Indep-
endent Order of OdclfellOws; sur-
rendered its charter to Grand
Lodge and thus•officially ceased
to exist. The lodge had been un4.
active for a long period. The
local I.O.O.F. Lodge was, estab-
lished in 1873. A cash book re-
cording payment of fees dated
May 9, 1873, listed James Somer-
ville as member number one.
• Over half the rural public
school teachers of Huron County
had resigned, most'of them to
take teaching positions in towns
and cities.,The school inspector
reported that the0 was little
chance of replacing them all,
,forecasting that some schools
might not.have a teacher in Sept-
ember. Salaries ranged. from
$1000 to $1400, an increase of 25
per cent, • •
