Mr. Moore reported that Murray

had intended to be present but last
minute commitments had made
this impossible.
Dr. Copeman explained that
many areas in Ontario were under-
serviced and to overcome this, in

introduced to help place doc-
tors
oc-torsin these places in Ontario.
Originally the plan` was' for north-
ern Ontario but was later extended
to include all of Ontario. '156
doctors have been placed in 93
communities since the plan was
started and these men were guar-
anteed 'an income of . $26 ,000 to
$28,000 annually. Dentists were
later included in the plan.
A primary factor in attracting
a doctor to a communityhas
been the establishing of a 'medic-
al centre in the community where
be or she might make their head -
quarters:
While no guarantee can be
given that a doctor will.locate
in Ripley,, past experience with
the Department of Health has
been that where proper facilities •
were madeavailable, no prob-
lem was experienced in securing
a doctor to serve the area.
Several ways 'of providing a
building were discussed. No,
grants are available on such a
building except the present wint.
er works grants.`
John Gamble spoke .represent-
ing the finance committee of the
community development group.
Robert Emerson, deputy -reeve
of Huron Township and Clayton
Nicholson, reeve of. Ripley, both,
commented, on the proposal ex-
plaining the commitments the.
councils presently have with fire
fighting project and community
,centre complex , but lending
their support to a medical centre
if the ' majority of the people were.
in favour
The Township of Huron is
presently; involved in the plan-
ning stages of a proposed medic-
al centre for Lucknow and is
committed to a 1010 figurein the
cost of this project.
A standing vote of those pres-
ent indicated that all were in
favour of theestablishing of a'
medical centre. •
Dr. Copeman reported that tri
3 1/2 years, 20 doctors have left
156 placements in'Olntario. He
said they try to fit the doctor to
the community, but that in the
event of him leaving, the corn-
munity would once again qualify
as under,serviced and an attempt
would be.made to locate a re-
placement.. /
